Chapter 5 - VANESSA’S LAST MOVE

Clara left just after midnight, but she did not make it to her sister’s house. Her taxi had traveled less than three miles when she saw a dark SUV following them through every turn. At first she told herself it was coincidence. Then the taxi exited onto a quieter road and the SUV followed. When the driver slowed near a gas station, the vehicle slowed too. Clara called Adrian before fear could convince her to stay silent. He answered on the first ring. “Where are you?” She told him. His voice changed immediately. He asked the driver to head toward the nearest police station and told Clara not to get out anywhere else. The SUV disappeared two blocks before they arrived, but not before Clara managed to photograph part of its license plate in the side mirror.

Adrian wanted to send security to bring her back to the mansion, but Clara refused. She would not return to a house where she had been assaulted, manipulated, and turned into evidence in someone else’s conflict. The police agreed to escort her to her sister’s apartment instead. Before ending the call, Adrian said quietly, “Thank you for calling me.” Clara almost laughed at the strange reversal. Hours earlier she had been begging him to listen. Now he was grateful she had trusted him with danger. “Don’t make me regret it,” she said, and ended the call.

Back at the mansion, Vanessa heard about the SUV and went pale. She asked to speak to Adrian without Olivia, lawyers, or police. He refused at first, but Melissa advised him to let the conversation happen in a monitored room. Vanessa sat opposite him at the dining table beneath a chandelier that made her look even more exhausted. She admitted Daniel had spoken often about Clara after learning she had seen the trust documents. He had wanted Vanessa to create a scandal strong enough to have Clara fired without questions. The stroller incident had been Vanessa’s idea, not Daniel’s, but Daniel had praised her willingness to act. Adrian struggled to remain seated. “You expected Clara to save Emma.” Vanessa nodded through tears. “I knew she would.” Adrian’s voice became almost inaudible. “And if she hadn’t?” Vanessa closed her eyes. That silence contained the answer.

Then Vanessa revealed one more thing. Earlier that afternoon, before Adrian arrived, Daniel had sent her a message telling her to check the hidden compartment beside the safe. She had not known it existed. She ignored the message because Clara entered the hall. When Daniel realized the plan with the stroller had failed and the recordings existed, he must have come for the old notebook himself. But he had taken the blue folder and missed the compartment. Melissa immediately asked how Daniel knew about a space Adrian did not know about. Vanessa had no answer. Someone had given him information that reached back before her marriage, perhaps before she had ever entered the Moretti family.

The night deepened. Police patrols circled the property. Olivia slept with Emma in the downstairs guest room because she refused to be separated from her sister. Adrian remained awake in the library with Melissa, reviewing old company records. Around three in the morning, the house alarm suddenly sounded. Every light along the west wing flickered out. Adrian rose, but the security system announced the source: nursery balcony door. He ran upstairs with two officers. The balcony door stood open to the cold night. Curtains lifted and fell like white flags. Nothing had been taken. On the nursery rug lay a single photograph—an image of Clara leaving the mansion earlier, taken from outside the gate.

The message was clear: they were being watched. Adrian called Clara immediately. She was safe at her sister’s apartment with police outside. The photograph, however, changed the investigation. Whoever Daniel worked with had access to the property perimeter and had likely followed Clara. Melissa urged Adrian to move the children to a secure hotel before dawn. Vanessa begged to come with them, insisting Daniel might target her too. Olivia refused. “He found us because of you.” Vanessa whispered that she understood. For the first time she did not fight the rejection. She asked only to hold Emma once before they left. Adrian hesitated. Then he allowed it with an officer present.

Vanessa held her daughter against her chest and wept without performance. “I am so sorry,” she said into Emma’s hair. It was not enough, and no one pretended it was. Some mistakes could be repaired by apology; others had to be carried into courtrooms, therapy rooms, and years of consequence. When Vanessa handed Emma back, she removed her wedding ring and placed it on the table. “I don’t deserve to ask you to wait for me,” she told Adrian. “I don’t even know who I became.” Adrian looked at the ring but did not touch it. “Find out,” he said. “And tell the truth.”

At 4:17 A.M., police escorted Vanessa to a protected location where she would cooperate with detectives. Adrian, Olivia, and Emma prepared to leave by a separate route. Before they stepped outside, Melissa’s laptop chimed with the results of a database search. Thomas Rourke had a son: Daniel Thomas Rourke, age forty-one. The photograph showed a man with the same sharp features Vanessa had described. But another result appeared beneath it—a corporate registration from three months earlier listing Daniel as a consultant to a company Adrian knew intimately. Moretti Residential Development. Adrian stared at the name of the executive who had hired him. It was his uncle, Victor Moretti. The old family war had not entered the mansion from the outside. Someone had opened the door from within.
