Chapter 1 - SHE DROPPED THE BABY FROM THE BALCONY—BUT THE NANNY CAUGHT HIM… THEN HIS FATHER SAW WHO WAS STANDING ABOVE“NO! PLEASE—DON’T!”

“NO! PLEASE—DON’T!”

Maria’s scream ripped through the billionaire’s mansion.

High above the marble foyer, Vanessa Sterling stood behind the glass balcony railing, holding eight-month-old Oliver against her chest.

The baby was crying.

Below, Maria—the family nanny—stared upward in horror.

“Give him to me!” Maria begged.

Vanessa’s expression remained terrifyingly calm.

“You should’ve kept your mouth shut.”

Then her arms opened.

“NO!”

Oliver fell.

Maria ran beneath him, throwing out both arms.

She caught the baby—but the impact sent her crashing onto the polished floor.

Oliver screamed.

Maria curled around him protectively, crying as she checked his face and tiny hands.

“You’re okay… I’ve got you.”

Footsteps thundered behind her.

Adrian Cole, Oliver’s father, had just entered the mansion.

He stopped dead.

His briefcase slipped from his hand.

His baby was on the floor.

Maria was crying.

And Vanessa stood above them.

“What the hell happened?!”

Vanessa immediately pointed downward.

“ADRIAN! Maria dropped him!”

Maria’s head snapped up.

“No!”

Adrian rushed toward his son.

“She’s lying!” Maria screamed. “I caught him!”

Vanessa hurried downstairs.

“She’s been unstable for weeks. Fire her before she hurts him again!”

Adrian stared between them, confused and furious.

Then Maria whispered:

“Check the security cameras.”

Vanessa froze.

Adrian noticed.

“What?”

Maria held Oliver tighter.

“Your fiancée forgot there’s a camera facing that balcony.”

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the hallway.

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

“Where are you going?”

“Let me go!”

“Not until I see that footage.”

Ten minutes later, the security video played across the living-room television.

Adrian watched Vanessa release his son.

His face turned white.

“You tried to kill my baby…”

“No!” Vanessa cried. “You don’t understand!”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Then make me understand.”

Vanessa stared at Maria.

And suddenly smiled.

“Ask your precious nanny why she knew exactly where to stand.”

Silence.

Adrian slowly looked at Maria.

Maria’s face changed.

Vanessa continued.

“She knew this was going to happen.”

Adrian whispered:

“Maria?”

Tears filled the nanny’s eyes.

“There’s something I haven’t told you.”

“What?”

Maria reached into her pocket and placed a small flash drive on the table.

“Your late wife gave me this three days before she died.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“My wife?”

Maria nodded.

“She knew someone would eventually come after Oliver.”

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

But Maria shook her head.

“No, Mr. Cole.”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“She wasn’t warning me about Vanessa.”

A door slowly opened upstairs.

Maria looked toward the balcony and went pale.

“She was warning me about the person who just came home.”
