Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO WASN’T DEAD

Daniel did not move for three full seconds.

Maria counted them.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then he grabbed Celeste by the upper arm.

Not violently.

But with enough force to erase any doubt that the conversation had changed.

“Say that again.”

Celeste looked almost pleased.

“Anna is alive.”

Lily gasped.

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“You are lying.”

“Am I?”

“You attended her funeral.”

“So did you.”

Maria watched Daniel’s face.

He did not look like a federal agent now.

He looked like a man standing on the edge of something he had spent two years refusing to imagine.

His wife had died when a black SUV went through a guardrail outside Stamford.

The vehicle burned.

Dental records identified the body.

Maria knew that much from newspapers.

Daniel had disappeared from public life for months afterward.

When he returned, he had Noah.

A baby who had been born three weeks before Anna’s death.

Celeste tipped her chin toward the waterproof key fob.

“Open it.”

Daniel turned to the evidence technician.

“Bag it.”

“Daniel,” Celeste said.

He ignored her.

“Agent Hart.”

Celeste laughed.

“Open it.”

His jaw tightened.

Maria could see the war happening inside him.

Professional procedure versus a dead woman’s key.

Procedure won.

Barely.

“Bag it.”

The technician sealed the device.

Daniel turned to Maria.

“Take Lily and Noah inside.”

Celeste immediately said, “No.”

Everyone looked at her.

She had spoken too fast.

Maria’s pulse jumped.

Daniel noticed.

“Why not?”

Celeste recovered.

“Because Maria is under suspicion.”

“No, she isn’t.”

The words came so cleanly that Maria felt them in her chest.

Celeste stared.

Daniel continued.

“She dove into a pool to save my son. The stroller was sabotaged. You had camera access. You were seen touching it.”

“You cannot prove I pushed it.”

“I don’t need to yet.”

Celeste smiled.

“And if Maria helped me?”

Maria stepped forward.

“That’s insane.”

Celeste turned to her.

“You started working here eight months ago. Daniel started his undercover operation six months ago. Interesting timing.”

Maria froze.

She had never known about the operation.

Daniel did not look at her.

“Enough.”

Celeste kept going.

“Did she tell you why she really took this job?”

Daniel’s eyes shifted.

Maria’s stomach dropped.

There it was.

The secret she had prayed would never matter.

Celeste saw the reaction.

And smiled.

“Oh.”

Daniel looked at Maria.

“What is she talking about?”

Maria swallowed.

“Not here.”

“Maria.”

“Please.”

His expression hardened.

“You need to tell me.”

She looked at Lily.

The child was listening to everything.

“Not in front of her.”

That stopped him.

He looked at the emergency nurse.

“Take the children to the east sitting room. Two agents with them.”

Lily grabbed Maria’s hand.

“No.”

Maria crouched.

“I’ll come in a minute.”

“You promise?”

“Yes.”

Daniel glanced at her.

Maria corrected herself.

“I will do everything I can.”

Lily nodded and allowed the nurse to lead her away.

When the doors closed, Daniel faced Maria.

“Now.”

Celeste watched like someone waiting for theater to begin.

Maria took a breath.

“My full name is Maria Serrano.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You know the name on my application.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“My legal name is Maria Anna Serrano.”

Celeste laughed softly.

Daniel stared.

“Anna?”

“My middle name.”

“Why does that matter?”

Maria looked at Celeste.

“Because my older sister’s name was Anna.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Maria continued.

“Anna Serrano.”

The patio went silent.

Daniel’s face became unreadable.

“My wife’s maiden name was Keller.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you saying?”

Maria reached beneath the collar of her soaked uniform.

A silver chain.

A small locket.

She opened it.

Inside was an old photograph of two girls.

Maria at fourteen.

Anna at twenty-one.

Daniel took the locket.

His hand shook.

The older girl had darker hair than Daniel’s wife usually wore.

But the eyes.

The shape of the smile.

The tiny scar above the eyebrow.

Recognition arrived like a blow.

“No.”

Maria nodded.

“Your wife was my sister.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

Almost as though she had been waiting for this.

Daniel stared at Maria.

“For eight months you’ve been living in my house.”

“Yes.”

“Taking care of my children.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t know if you were the reason she disappeared.”

His face changed.

Behind them, someone inhaled sharply.

Daniel looked as though she had struck him.

Maria hated herself for it.

But the truth was already out.

“She told me years ago that if anything happened to her, I should never trust the first story.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“When?”

“Before she married you.”

“You met her after?”

“Rarely.”

“Why?”

Maria looked down.

“Anna changed her name. She cut contact with most of the family.”

“Because?”

“Our father.”

Daniel knew that name.

Miguel Serrano.

Convicted money launderer.

Dead now.

Or supposed to be.

Maria continued.

“Anna wanted a different life.”

“And she chose me.”

“She loved you.”

Daniel’s expression cracked for one second.

“How do you know?”

“Because she called me after Noah was born.”

His eyes widened.

“When?”

“Two days before the crash.”

Maria had remembered every second of that phone call.

Anna crying.

Whispering.

Saying she had made a terrible mistake.

Saying Daniel was in danger.

Saying the baby was in more danger.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“I tried.”

Daniel stared.

“I called your office.”

“When?”

“The day after the crash.”

“No record.”

“I called again.”

“Who answered?”

Maria looked at Celeste.

“A woman.”

Daniel turned slowly.

Celeste’s smile vanished.

“Who?” he asked.

Maria pointed.

“Her.”

Celeste shook her head.

“That is absurd.”

“I never forget a voice.”

Celeste laughed.

“You spoke to me for thirty seconds two years ago.”

“You told me Daniel had no family left.”

Daniel looked at Celeste.

She said nothing.

Maria continued.

“You said if I contacted him again, you would tell federal agents I was connected to my father’s crimes.”

Daniel’s face went cold.

“You threatened her?”

“I protected you.”

“From my wife’s sister?”

“From the Serranos.”

Maria’s anger rose.

“You knew exactly who I was when I applied for this job.”

Celeste said nothing.

Daniel stared at her.

“Did you?”

Celeste smiled faintly.

“Of course.”

The answer stunned him.

Maria felt it too.

“Why let me in?” Maria asked.

“Because I wanted to know what you knew.”

Daniel stepped closer to Celeste.

“You approved the household background checks.”

“Yes.”

“You flagged Maria as clean.”

“She is clean.”

“That isn’t the point.”

Celeste leaned toward him.

“The point is that Anna trusted her.”

Daniel’s voice became dangerous.

“And you thought Maria might lead you to Anna.”

Celeste smiled.

“Now you’re thinking.”

Daniel looked at Maria.

“Did she?”

“No.”

“Do you know where Anna is?”

“No.”

“Did Anna contact you after the crash?”

Maria hesitated.

Daniel saw it.

“Maria.”

“Once.”

His face lost color.

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

The same month his undercover operation began.

Celeste’s eyes sharpened.

“What did she say?”

Maria ignored her.

Daniel moved closer.

“What did Anna say?”

“She sent me a letter.”

“Where is it?”

“I burned it.”

His expression became fury.

“Why?”

“Because she told me to.”

“What did it say?”

Maria closed her eyes.

Only seven words mattered.

She opened them.

“Protect the children from the woman in green.”

Celeste went completely still.

Daniel stared at her.

The whole patio seemed to contract.

Then he turned toward the house.

“Get Celeste inside. Federal interview room. Nobody speaks to her without me.”

Two agents moved.

Celeste did not resist.

As they unfastened the cuff from the railing, she looked at Maria.

“You think Anna trusted you.”

Maria said nothing.

Celeste smiled.

“She used you.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Move.”

They took her away.

For the first time since the accusation, Maria and Daniel were alone beside the pool.

The water was calm again.

That felt obscene.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why did you really come here?”

“To protect Noah and Lily.”

“From Celeste?”

“I didn’t know who.”

“From me?”

Maria swallowed.

“Yes.”

Pain crossed his face.

“Did you ever believe I hurt Anna?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Do you now?”

Maria looked at the stroller.

The sabotaged wheel.

The hidden key fob.

The camera blackout.

“No.”

Daniel’s shoulders lowered slightly.

“Why?”

“Because when Noah went into the water, you didn’t look at me first.”

He frowned.

“You looked at him.”

Maria’s voice softened.

“You forgot the accusation. You forgot the guests. You forgot your operation.”

Daniel said nothing.

“You were just his father.”

Something in his eyes shifted.

Then an agent ran onto the patio.

“Sir.”

Daniel turned.

“We accessed the device.”

His face changed.

“What is on it?”

“Video.”

“Of what?”

The agent hesitated.

“Mrs. Hart.”

Daniel’s knees almost buckled.

Maria stepped closer.

“When?”

“Timestamp says eleven days ago.”

The world stopped.

Daniel whispered, “Play it.”

The agent held up a tablet.

Anna appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Hair shorter.

Face thinner.

Eyes frightened.

But alive.

Daniel made a sound Maria had never heard from a man before.

Anna looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel.”

His hand covered his mouth.

“If you found this, Celeste failed.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

Anna continued.

“Noah is not safe.”

Maria’s heart pounded.

“Neither is Lily.”

Then Anna leaned closer.

“And neither are you.”

Static cut across the video.

The image jumped.

Anna’s face reappeared.

“Do not trust anyone inside the house.”

Daniel stared.

Maria felt cold.

Anna’s last sentence came out in a whisper.

“Especially the person who told you I was dead.”

The video ended.

Daniel slowly turned toward the estate.

Every security officer.

Every staff member.

Every guest.

Every locked room.

Suddenly looked different.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No voice.

Only a baby crying.

Daniel went white.

He looked toward the east sitting room.

May you like

“Where is Noah?”

Maria ran before he finished the sentence.
