Chapter 1 - THE FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARK “Stop it, please! You’re breaking his arm!”

Lily Carter’s scream tore through the Blackwood mansion.
Fourteen-month-old Ethan was on the marble floor, crying so violently that he could barely catch his breath. One tiny hand clawed at the polished stone while Serena Montigue held his other wrist.
The mansion was normally a place of controlled silence—soft music, expensive perfume, polished silver, and servants trained to disappear before anyone important noticed them.
Tonight, the silence had become something else.
Fear.
Lily ran barefoot across the foyer.
“Let him go!”
Serena turned.
She was beautiful in the way magazine covers were beautiful. Her black dress was flawless. Her hair was perfectly arranged. A diamond bracelet glittered around her wrist.
Six weeks from now, she was supposed to become Mrs. Victor Blackwood.
Chicago society adored her.
Lily knew what society did not.
Serena smiled as though nothing were wrong.
“You're being dramatic.”
“He’s a baby!”
“He’s a Blackwood.”
Serena released Ethan.
For half a second, Lily thought it was over.
Then Serena drove her heel into Lily’s stomach.
Lily collapsed.

Her head struck the marble. The chandelier above her dissolved into a spinning halo.
Ethan screamed again.
That sound brought Lily back.
She crawled toward him.
“Ethan…”
Serena stepped on the back of her uniform.
“Touch him again,” she whispered, “and you disappear.”
Lily looked up.
“You think anyone will believe a cheap nanny over me?”
Then the lights flickered.
A door opened somewhere in the west corridor.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Controlled.
Serena froze.
Lily turned.
Victor Blackwood stepped from the darkness.
His black coat was wet from the rain. His tie was missing. Two security men followed several feet behind him.
He was supposed to be in Montreal until morning.
Nobody had expected him.
Victor looked at Ethan.
Then Lily.
Then Serena.
His expression did not change.
That was what frightened everyone.
“What happened?”
Serena moved first.
“Victor…”
Her voice trembled perfectly.
“She lost control. I tried to stop her.”
Lily stared at her.
Victor crouched beside his son.
Ethan reached for him.
“Daddy…”
Something cracked across Victor’s face.
He lifted Ethan carefully.
“Call Dr. Moreno.”
Marco Ruiz immediately pulled out his phone.
Victor then looked at Lily.
“Can you stand?”
“I… I think so.”
He helped her sit against the console.
Then his eyes moved toward the staircase.
A security camera hung above it.
Its red indicator was dark.
“Why is that camera off?”
Serena answered too quickly.
“Maintenance.”
Marco checked his phone.
“No maintenance was scheduled.”
Silence.
Victor's eyes narrowed.
Then he saw something beneath the console table.
A small black recorder.
He picked it up.
Serena went pale.
“Victor, that proves nothing.”
He pressed play.
Her own voice filled the foyer.
You think anyone will believe a cheap nanny over me?
Then Ethan screamed.
Then Lily:
You're breaking his arm.
Victor stopped the recording.
He looked at Serena.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“I understand the first five minutes.”
He turned toward Marco.
“Lock the gates.”
Serena's face drained of color.
Victor carried Ethan toward the door.
Then he stopped.
He looked at her one last time.
“You do not give orders in this house anymore.”
He disappeared into the rain.
Lily remained on the floor.
Then a housemaid appeared halfway down the staircase.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Sir…”
Victor turned.
The woman swallowed.
May you like
“This wasn't the first time.”
And suddenly, the recording in Victor's hand was no longer the most dangerous evidence inside his mansion.
