Chapter 3 - The 24-Hour NoticeChaos is a fascinating thing to observe from a distance.

While I spent the morning playing Legos with Noah on the heated floors of the penthouse, the Hawthorne estate was descending into absolute madness. My security team, discreetly stationed at the estate’s perimeter, sent me live updates.

At 8:30 AM, Margaret had attempted to take "Daniel’s" Mercedes to the country club for her weekly brunch, only to find the vehicle immobilized. The security gate refused to open. When she screamed at the guards, they politely informed her that the vehicle was registered to Vanguard Holdings and had been scheduled for repossession.

By 9:00 AM, Daniel’s sister, Chloe, discovered that her black Amex—the one she had been using to fund her lavish influencer lifestyle in Milan—was declined at a luxury boutique online. She called Daniel in tears, only to find him hyperventilating in his home office.

Around noon, my iPad chimed with a FaceTime request. It wasn't from Daniel—he was still blocked. It was from Margaret.

I stared at the screen, letting it ring twice before I answered.

Margaret’s face filled the screen. She looked disheveled. Her pristine hair was out of place, and her usually smug face was pale, contorted with rage and disbelief. Behind her, I could see the grand foyer of the estate, littered with open designer suitcases and frantic staff.

"Evelyn! What is the meaning of this?!" she shrieked, entirely abandoning her aristocratic facade. "A man in a suit just handed me a piece of paper telling me I have to leave my own house! Daniel is having a panic attack in the study!"

"Hello, Margaret," I said evenly, adjusting the camera so she could see the stunning, multi-million-dollar view behind me. "I see you received the notice."

"Turn this off right now! I know you're hacking his accounts or playing some sick joke!" She pointed a trembling finger at the camera. "Daniel is a wealthy man! He saved this family! You are a penniless nobody!"

"Margaret," I interrupted, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register that made her snap her mouth shut. "Daniel didn't save anything. Three years ago, when your husband died and left you drowning in eight million dollars of debt, Daniel begged me for help. I bought the debt. I bought the house. I bought the cars you drive, the clothes you wear, and the food you ate at the reunion yesterday."

She stared at me, her mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. "You... you're lying."

"Call your bank. Call the deed office. Call anyone you like," I said, leaning closer to the camera. "You told me I acted like I owned the place. You were right. I do. And as of tomorrow morning, you are trespassing."

"Evelyn, please—" Margaret’s tone suddenly shifted, panic bleeding into her voice as the reality of her situation finally breached her arrogance. "We're family. We have nowhere to go. My friends... my reputation..."

"You insulted me in front of my son," I reminded her coldly. "You told me to leave. I'm just following the matriarch's orders."

I ended the call.

An hour later, the building concierge buzzed my penthouse line.

"Ms. Vance, my apologies for the interruption," Thomas said, sounding slightly strained. "There is a gentleman down here demanding to see you. A Mr. Daniel Hawthorne. He is making quite a scene."

I walked over to the security monitor on the wall and pulled up the lobby feed. There he was. The man who had humiliated me less than twenty-four hours ago was currently being restrained by two burly security guards. His tailored suit was rumpled, his tie was loose, and he looked utterly unhinged as he shouted at the front desk.

"Send him up, Thomas," I said. "But have security escort him. He has exactly five minutes."

When the elevator doors opened directly into my penthouse, Daniel stumbled out, flanked by two towering guards. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes sweeping over the vaulted ceilings, the original artwork, the sweeping staircase, and finally landing on me.

I was wearing a tailored white suit, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water. I looked like the CEO I had always been, not the submissive wife he had molded me to be.

"Evie..." he breathed, his voice cracking. He took a step forward, but the guards immediately blocked him. "Evie, tell me this is a joke. Tell me Arthur Sterling is lying. You don't... you can't be Vanguard."

"Have a seat, Daniel," I said, gesturing to a solitary chair in the center of the room. It felt like an interrogation.

He didn't sit. He fell to his knees.

"Evelyn, please," he begged, tears welling in his eyes. It was pathetic. This wasn't the man who had confidently told me to get out of his life. This was a man watching his entire identity disintegrate. "I was drunk last night. My mother got into my head. I didn't mean any of it! You're my wife. You're the mother of my child!"

"Don't bring Noah into this," I snapped, my composure slipping for just a fraction of a second to reveal the molten anger underneath. "You didn't care about Noah when you let your mother call me dramatic. You didn't care about him when you grabbed my wrist and threatened me. You only care now because the money is gone."

"That's not true! I love you!" he sobbed, crawling slightly closer.

I looked down at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No pity. No love. Just a clinical detachment.

"The severance papers have already been drafted," I said, walking over to the marble island and sliding a sleek manila folder across the surface. "You are officially terminated as CEO of Hawthorne Real Estate, which Vanguard is liquidating on Monday. Your accounts are frozen. The divorce papers are underneath the termination letter. I am filing for full custody."

"Full custody?" he choked out, staring at the folder as if it were a bomb. "Evelyn, you can't leave me with nothing! I'm your husband!"

"You were a charity case, Daniel," I whispered, the truth finally cutting through the air like a blade. "I loved you, so I bought you a life. But you forgot who paid the bill. Your five minutes are up."

I nodded to the guards. They hauled him to his feet.

"Evelyn, wait! We can fix this! Let's go to counseling! Evie!" his voice echoed down the private elevator shaft as the doors slid shut, cutting him off mid-scream.

I stood in the silence of the penthouse, took a deep breath, and smiled. The war hadn't even truly begun, and I had already won the first battle.

But as my phone buzzed with an unknown number, and a chilling voice on the other end said, "Ms. Vance, we know what you did with the Hawthorne accounts three years ago," I realized that taking down Daniel was going to be the easy part. Surviving the secrets I had buried to build Vanguard? That was going to be the real fight.
