My wife hit our two children. Then, I discovered something horrifying—a secret recording left behind by my late wife—and it changed everything.

Chpter 1 : SHE RAISED THE WHIP OVER TWO TERRIFIED CHILDREN—THEN THEIR FATHER WALKED THROUGH THE DOOR
“DON’T TOUCH HER! HIT ME INSTEAD!”

The little boy’s scream ripped through the glittering ballroom.
Every guest turned.
Beneath the crystal chandeliers, eight-year-old Lucas Hayes was crouched against the wall, desperately wrapping his arms around his six-year-old sister, Sophie.
Sophie was crying into his chest.
Standing several feet away was Victoria Langford, dressed in an elegant burgundy velvet gown.
In her hand was a black riding crop.
And she was furious.
“I told you not to leave that room!” Victoria snapped.
Lucas tightened his arms around Sophie.

May you like

“She was scared.”
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
Victoria stepped closer.
Lucas immediately moved in front of his sister.
“Please. We won’t bother anyone.”
Dozens of guests stared in stunned silence.
This was supposed to be Victoria’s engagement celebration—a night of champagne, diamonds, and congratulations.
Instead, two frightened children were trembling against the wall.
Victoria raised the crop.
Sophie screamed.
Then—
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!”
A man’s voice exploded from the doorway.
Victoria froze.
Lucas slowly lifted his head.
Standing there was Michael Hayes.
Their father.
The man Victoria had told everyone wouldn’t return from Chicago until tomorrow.
Michael stared at his children.
Then at the crop.
Then at Victoria.
His face went pale.
“Dad?”
Lucas’s voice broke.
Michael rushed forward.
Victoria stepped toward him.
“Michael, wait! I can explain—”
“What are you doing with that?”
“She lost control,” Victoria said quickly. “Sophie threw a tantrum, and Lucas attacked me when I tried to discipline her.”
Lucas stared at her.
“That’s not true!”
“Be quiet!”
Victoria swung the crop toward him.
Michael reacted instantly.
He grabbed her arm.
“DON’T YOU EVER TOUCH MY SON AGAIN!”

Victoria tried to pull free.
“Let go of me!”
In the struggle, she stumbled backward, lost her balance on the polished marble floor, and crashed down.
Gasps filled the ballroom.
But Michael barely looked at her.
He ran to Lucas and Sophie.
Both children threw themselves into his arms.
Michael dropped to his knees.
“I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”
Lucas tried to stay strong.
He couldn’t.
He buried his face against his father’s shoulder and began sobbing.
Michael’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Lucas whispered something that made Michael stop breathing.
“She said you wouldn’t believe us.”
Michael slowly looked toward Victoria.
“What?”
Lucas trembled.
“She said if we told you… she’d make sure you never saw us again.”
The ballroom went silent.
Victoria climbed to her feet.
“He’s lying.”
Michael stared at her.
“My eight-year-old son is lying?”
“He hates me! Both of them do!”
Sophie suddenly pulled away from her father.
“No.”
Her tiny voice silenced everyone.
Michael looked down.
Sophie pointed toward Victoria.
“She told us Mommy died because of us.”
Michael’s expression changed instantly.
“What did you say?”
Victoria went white.
Lucas grabbed his father’s sleeve.
“She said Mom would still be alive if Sophie had never been born.”
Michael stood.
For three years, he had blamed himself for his wife Rachel’s death.
A highway accident.
A rainy night.
A tragedy the police had closed within forty-eight hours.
Victoria had entered his life six months later.
She had comforted him.
Helped with the children.
Eventually, she became the woman he planned to marry.
Now Michael looked at her as though he were seeing a stranger.
“How do my children know details about Rachel’s accident?”
Victoria said nothing.
Michael stepped closer.
“I never told them.”
Still nothing.
Then a woman among the guests spoke.
“I think I know.”
Everyone turned.
Emily Carter, the children’s former nanny, stepped forward.
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“You.”
Emily had disappeared three months earlier.
At least, that was what Michael had been told.
Victoria claimed Emily had stolen jewelry and fled.
But Emily wasn’t running.
She had been hiding.
And now she was holding an envelope.
Michael stared at her.
“Victoria told me you left the country.”
Emily shook her head.
“She fired me.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw what she was doing to Lucas and Sophie.”
Victoria shouted, “She’s lying!”
Emily ignored her.
“And because I found something in your study.”
She handed Michael the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Bank statements.
And a copy of a police report.
Michael’s hands began trembling.
“What is this?”
Emily lowered her voice.
“Rachel called Victoria seven times the night she died.”
Michael looked up sharply.
“That’s impossible. They barely knew each other.”
Emily swallowed.
“That’s what I thought.”
Michael looked at the phone records again.
Seven calls.
The final one had lasted eleven minutes.
It ended less than twenty minutes before Rachel’s car left the road.
Michael stared at Victoria.
“You spoke to my wife that night?”
Victoria backed away.
“Michael—”
“ANSWER ME!”
“Yes!”
The word echoed through the ballroom.
Lucas pulled Sophie closer.
Michael’s voice dropped.
“What did Rachel say?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with panic.
Emily stepped forward.
“That isn’t the question you should be asking.”
Michael turned toward her.
Emily reached into her purse and removed an old phone.
“I recovered this from a box Victoria ordered me to destroy.”
Victoria lunged forward.
“NO!”
Two guests stopped her.
Emily unlocked the phone.
“There’s a recording on it.”
Michael stared at the screen.
“A recording of what?”
Emily pressed play.
A woman’s frightened voice filled the ballroom.
Michael recognized it immediately.
Rachel.
His dead wife.
She was crying.
Then another voice came through the recording.
Victoria’s.
Michael’s face drained of color.
Rachel whispered:
“If anything happens to me tonight, Michael needs to know what you did.”
The recording suddenly stopped.
Michael looked at Emily.
“Where’s the rest?”
Emily stared at Victoria.
“I don’t have it.”
“Then who does?”
Emily slowly looked down.
At Lucas.
Michael followed her gaze.
And Lucas whispered:
“Mom gave it to me before she died.”
