Chapter 1 - THE SLAP

The sound of Daniel Cross's hand striking Evelyn Mercer's face cracked through the marble hall like a gunshot.

Evie staggered sideways, one hand flying to her left cheek while the other instinctively covered the curve of her seven-month pregnancy.

For one frozen second, nobody moved.

The chandelier above them glittered with cruel brightness, the white marble floor reflected every face, and the silence seemed to magnify Daniel's ragged breathing.

He pointed at her as though she were the one who had committed an offense.

“Don't talk to Lauren like that!”

Evie's eyes burned, but she refused to look away.

Her cheek throbbed.

Her heart hurt worse.

Less than ten minutes earlier, she had walked into the west salon and found Daniel's phone on the sofa beside Lauren Blake's gold evening bag.

A message had lit the screen before she could turn away.

I can't keep pretending in front of her.

The reply beneath it had come from Lauren.

Then stop pretending.

Evie had asked one question.

Daniel had lied.

Lauren had smiled.

Evie had asked again.

Now her face was on fire.

“Are you sleeping with her?”

The words trembled out of Evie, not because she was unsure, but because some wounded part of her still needed him to deny it.

Lauren gave a soft laugh.

She moved closer to Daniel, slipped her arm through his, and rested her blonde head against his shoulder as if the position belonged to her.

“I don't think she quite grasps the situation yet.”

Daniel did not push Lauren away.

That was the answer Evie had feared more than any confession.

Tears slipped down her face.

She tasted salt at the corner of her mouth and lowered her hand from her cheek.

The pain inside her chest shifted.

Something softer in her broke.

Something harder took its place.

“I understand everything perfectly.”

Lauren's smirk vanished.

Daniel's head turned toward the enormous black doors at the far end of the hall.

The doors stood open.

Sebastian Cross had entered without anyone noticing.

He wore a dark suit without a tie, his white shirt open at the collar, and behind him stood four men in black suits whose stillness made them look more dangerous than men who shouted.

Sebastian was sixty-eight years old, silver-haired, broad-shouldered, and famous for speaking quietly even when the room around him was falling apart.

That quiet was missing now.

He strode across the marble floor with fury written in every line of his face.

Daniel released Lauren's arm.

“Dad.”

Sebastian did not answer.

He stopped beside Evie and looked at the red mark already rising across her cheek.

His gaze dropped briefly to her stomach.

“Did he hit you?”

Evie swallowed.

Daniel rushed in before she could speak.

“She was screaming at Lauren and threatening to ruin everything.”

Sebastian looked at his son.

Daniel's voice died.

“You raised your hand to a pregnant woman.”

“She pushed me.”

Evie stared at him in disbelief.

“I never touched you.”

Lauren stepped forward with a wounded expression that arrived too quickly to be real.

“Mr.

Cross, this is a misunderstanding.”

Sebastian turned to her.

Lauren stopped.

He looked back at Daniel.

“We made a promise to her.”

Daniel's face lost color.

Evie heard the sentence, but she did not understand it.

“A promise to who?”

Sebastian's anger flickered into something else.

Regret.

The change was so fast Evie almost missed it.

Before Sebastian could answer, one of the bodyguards crossed the hall and whispered something into his ear.

Sebastian's expression hardened again.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“From inside the house?”

“Yes, sir.”

Daniel stepped back.

Evie noticed.

Sebastian noticed too.

He held out his hand to the bodyguard.

The man placed a black phone in it.

Sebastian looked at the screen for several seconds, then lifted his eyes to his son.

“Someone accessed the Mercer Trust server from this property.”

Daniel gave a short, nervous laugh.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Sebastian handed the phone back.

“Everything, if the file they opened is the one I think it is.”

Lauren's hand slipped from Daniel's arm.

Evie felt the baby move sharply beneath her palm.

She looked from Lauren to Daniel and realized they were both afraid of the same thing.

“What file?”

Sebastian turned to Evie.

“You shouldn't have had to learn any of this tonight.”

“Learn what?”

He glanced at the red mark on her face.

“Your father did not leave you only money.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Sebastian continued.

“He left you control.”

Evie frowned.

“Control of what?”

“Enough voting shares to decide who owns the future of Cross-Mercer Group.”

The hall seemed to tilt under her feet.

Daniel had told her for years that the trust left by her father was conservative, passive, and inaccessible until she turned thirty-five.

She was twenty-nine.

Sebastian's next words made her blood run cold.

“And when your child is born, the final block of shares transfers into your branch of the trust.”

Evie looked slowly at Daniel.

He would not meet her eyes.

Lauren did.

There was hatred in Lauren's face now, stripped of elegance and pretense.

Evie understood another piece.

The affair was not the whole betrayal.

Maybe it was not even the worst one.

Sebastian gestured toward his men.

“Lock the study.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You can't lock me out of my own house.”

Sebastian's voice dropped.

“This house belongs to the holding company.”

Then he looked directly at Evie.

“And as of tonight, Daniel, I am no longer certain the holding company belongs to you.”

A heavy electronic click echoed from the corridor as the security doors sealed.

Lauren whispered something under her breath.

Evie could not hear the words.

But Daniel did.

His face changed.

He lunged toward the staircase.

Two bodyguards caught him before he reached the first step.

Sebastian did not move.

“What are you trying to get upstairs?”

Daniel struggled once, then stopped.

Evie's fear sharpened into certainty.

There was something in this house Daniel was more afraid of losing than his marriage.

May you like

Sebastian looked at Evie and said the words that would follow her through every nightmare that came after.

“Before anyone leaves this property, we are going to find out what your husband has been doing to you.”
