CHAPTER 16 — THE LAST TRAP AT BLACK HARBOR

“IF YOU SEE REBECCA, YOU DO NOT RUN TOWARD HER.”
Daniel looked directly at Ethan.
They stood inside a federal command vehicle two miles from Black Harbor.
Ethan crossed his arms.
“You know saying that guarantees I’m going to want to.”
“I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I spent fourteen years learning how to be your father instead of your bodyguard. Don’t make me relapse.”
Ethan smiled despite the tension.
“Stay behind the agents. Understood.”
The plan was simple.
Which meant Daniel distrusted it immediately.
Aaron believed Daniel was bringing the original ledger.
Instead, agents had created a replica.
A tracking device was hidden inside.
The real ledger had already been scanned and secured.
Aaron no longer had anything meaningful to gain.
But Rebecca remained in danger.
Daniel would make the exchange.
Agents would surround the lighthouse.
Ethan was supposed to remain in the command vehicle.
Then Aaron called.
“Bring Ethan.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.”
“Then your sister-in-law dies.”
“You don’t need him.”
Aaron laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“Cross doesn’t want the ledger.”
Daniel looked at the agents.
“What does he want?”
“Evelyn.”
Daniel froze.
Aaron continued.
“Bring the old woman.”
“No.”
“Then bring Ethan.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn will trade herself for him.”
Daniel understood.
Aaron wanted leverage against Evelyn.
The ledger was a distraction.
Daniel whispered.
“Cross is still controlling this.”
Aaron laughed.
“You think an eighty-eight-year-old man rolled up to your gate because he was desperate?”
Daniel said nothing.
“He wanted you looking at him.”
The line went dead.
Federal agents changed the plan.
Evelyn insisted on participating.
Daniel refused.
She ignored him.
“You inherited that expression from your father.”
“What expression?”
“The one where you think saying no louder makes it law.”
“Mom—”
“I lost forty years with my sons because other men decided what was best for me.”
Her voice sharpened.
“You will not become another one.”
Daniel stared.
Then nodded.
“Fine.”
Evelyn squeezed his hand.
“Thank you.”
“But you stay behind the tactical team.”
She smiled.
“I raised two Whitmore boys. I know how to pretend to agree.”
Daniel almost laughed.
At sunset, he approached Black Harbor carrying the fake ledger.
The Atlantic crashed against the cliffs.
Aaron waited inside the lighthouse.
Rebecca sat near the staircase.
Her hands were tied, but she appeared unharmed.
Daniel stopped ten feet away.
“Let her go.”
Aaron smiled.
“You always were terrible at negotiation.”
“And you were always overrated as security.”
Aaron’s smile disappeared.
Daniel lifted the ledger.
“You want this?”
Aaron reached for it.
Daniel pulled it back.
“Rebecca first.”
Aaron placed a pistol against Rebecca’s shoulder.
“Ledger.”
Daniel threw it across the floor.
Aaron picked it up.
He opened several pages.
Then smiled.
“Finally.”
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
He gave the smallest nod.
She understood.
Aaron moved toward the rear exit.
Then alarms erupted outside.
He froze.
“What did you do?”
Daniel answered calmly.
“What Claire taught me.”
Aaron raised his weapon.
“She taught you to betray deals?”
“No.”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“She taught me never to put the only copy in one place.”
Aaron realized the ledger was useless.
He grabbed Rebecca.
Before he could move, the lighthouse lights went out.
Ethan had found the old electrical controls on the historic building plans.
Daniel had explicitly told him to remain in the vehicle.
Daniel would discuss that later.
Much later.
In darkness, Rebecca dropped.
Daniel heard Aaron curse.
Agents breached the door.
A shot exploded.
Then another.
Daniel crawled toward Rebecca.
He found her.
Pulled her behind the stone wall.
Emergency lights flashed on.
Aaron stood near the stairs.
His gun pointed toward Daniel.
Then Evelyn appeared behind the agents.
Aaron saw her.
Everything stopped.
“You.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You watched my family for years.”
Aaron laughed bitterly.
“I was paid to.”
“You watched Claire.”
“Yes.”
“You watched Ethan.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s expression did not change.
“And after all those years, you still don’t understand why you lost.”
Aaron’s finger tightened around the trigger.
Daniel saw it.
He moved toward Rebecca.
Not Aaron.
The gun fired.
Agents returned fire.
Aaron collapsed.
The bullet had struck the stone beside Daniel.
For several seconds, the only sound was the ocean.
Agents secured Aaron.
Alive.
Wounded.
Finished.
Daniel immediately looked for Ethan.
The young man emerged from the command team.
Daniel marched toward him.
“You turned off the lights.”
“Yes.”
“You were told to stay in the vehicle.”
“Yes.”
“Do you have any idea—”
Ethan hugged him.
Daniel stopped.
His anger disappeared.
“You’re impossible.”
“Genetics.”
Daniel laughed against his son’s shoulder.
Rebecca joined them.
Evelyn stood nearby.
For a moment, Black Harbor was no longer a place of hiding.
It was simply where another cycle ended.
Then an agent approached.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Daniel turned.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“The tracking device in the fake ledger transmitted for eleven minutes before Aaron opened it.”
“So?”
“It wasn’t transmitting only to us.”
Daniel frowned.
“Someone else was receiving the signal.”
“Where?”
The agent held up a tablet.
The location appeared.
Boston.
Cross Global Health Initiative headquarters.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Nathaniel.”
She nodded.
The agent continued.
“There’s more.”
Security cameras showed Nathaniel Cross entering the building twenty minutes earlier.
He was not alone.
Dr. Samuel Voss was with him.
The supposed protected witness.
Evelyn went pale.
Daniel understood.
Voss had not entered protection because he feared Cross.
He had entered it to control what investigators learned.
Cross still had one loyal witness inside the government’s case.
And now both men were together.
Michael called seconds later.
His voice was urgent.
“Daniel, turn on the news.”
Daniel opened the livestream.
Cross appeared behind a podium.
Reporters crowded the room.
The eighty-eight-year-old physician looked frail.
Respectable.
Harmless.
Then he announced:
“Today, I will release evidence proving the Whitmore family fabricated the entire clinical-trial conspiracy.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Cross smiled.
May you like
And the final battle shifted from hidden rooms and guns to something far more dangerous.
The truth itself.
