Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE GREEN VEST Three months later, Evelyn stood before hundreds of Delacroix Maritime employees.

Three months later, Evelyn stood before hundreds of Delacroix Maritime employees.
The board had offered her control of the company.

She refused.

Instead, she proposed something nobody expected.

The illegal divisions would be dissolved.

Victims would receive compensation.

Employee pensions would be protected through independently managed funds.

The remaining legitimate businesses would be reorganized under outside oversight.

Henri listened from the back row.

Victoire sat beside him.

Evelyn spoke without notes.

“My family spent decades believing power meant controlling what people knew.”

The room remained silent.

“They were wrong.”

She thought of the pool.

“Power is what you do when nobody believes you have any.”

Afterward, Henri approached her.

“I’m proud of you.”

Evelyn’s expression tightened.

“You don’t get to skip thirty years and become my father because you’re proud.”

Henri lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“But…”

He looked up.

“You can start with coffee.”

Henri smiled.

It was small.

Careful.

Hopeful.

“I’d like that.”

Across the room, Victoire watched.

Evelyn waved her over.

Victoire hesitated.

Then came.

For the first time, Henri stood between both daughters without lies separating them.

It was uncomfortable.

Imperfect.

May you like

But real.

And for this family, real was revolutionary.
