Chapter 1 - “DROP IT! STEP AWAY FROM HIM—NOW!”

His voice ripped through the house like a gunshot.

She froze.

The object in her hand was still raised above the disenchanted little boy curled on the marble floor. His tiny arms covered his head, his body shaking so violently that he could barely breathe.

And standing in the doorway was the one man she never expected to see.

His father.

He wasn't supposed to be home.

Not for another three days.

But one canceled meeting, one unexpected flight, and one decision to surprise his family had brought him through that door at the exact moment a nightmare was unfolding.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

This was the woman he trusted.

The woman who smiled across the dinner table, kissed him goodbye every morning, and promised she would protect the boy as if he were her own.

Yet the fear in his child's eyes told a completely different story.

“Daddy…”

That single broken word destroy whatever restraint he had left.

He rushed forward, pulled the boy into his arms, and turned his body into a shield between them. His son buried his face against his chest, gripping his jacket as though letting go would mean being left alone with her again.

“Tell me what happened.”

Silence.

“LOOK AT ME!”

She finally lowered her hand.

“You don't understand,” she whispered. “He did something. I was only trying to—”

“Trying to WHAT?”

His voice dropped dangerously low.

She began explaining. Excuses came quickly—too quickly. She mentioned the boy had been misbehaving. That everything looked worse than it really was. That he had walked in at exactly the wrong moment.

But then he noticed something.

His son wasn't looking at her.

He was staring toward the hallway.

Toward a closed door.

“What’s in that room?” his father asked.

The woman's face instantly changed.

“Nothing.”

One word.

One lie.

And suddenly everything felt different.

He carried his son toward the hallway.

“Don't,” she said.

He stopped.

“What did you say?”

She stepped forward, panic replacing anger.

“I said don't open that door.”

Now he knew.

Whatever had happened today wasn't the beginning.

It was only the moment he finally came home early enough to witness it.

He reached for the handle while she begged him to stop.

The little boy tightened his arms around his father's neck and whispered something so quietly that only he could hear it.

His father went completely still.

Then he slowly looked back at the woman he had trusted with everything.

His expression changed from rage… to disbelief.

Because behind that locked door was something far worse than he had imagined.

And once he opened it, there would be no going back.
