CHAPTER 18 — THE MAN WEARING MICHAEL’S LIFE

“THAT MAN HAS MY FACE.”

Michael stared at the photograph Eleanor had just received on her encrypted phone. The image showed a man stepping through Geneva Airport less than twenty minutes earlier. Same dark hair. Same height. Same scar above the eyebrow. Even the slight tension in his jaw looked familiar enough to make Rachel instinctively reach for Michael’s hand.

Thomas enlarged the image until pixels blurred around the stranger’s face. “Plastic surgery can copy features,” he said quietly. “But look at his posture.” The man held his shoulders exactly like Michael. His left thumb rested against his wedding finger, touching a ring identical to the one Michael had worn for twelve years.

Emily whispered, “They didn’t copy his face. They studied him.”

Eleanor’s silence confirmed it.

Michael turned toward her. “How long?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Janus doesn’t create replacements overnight. They study voices, habits, memories, relationships. Sometimes for years.”

Rachel’s expression hardened. “You knew this could happen?”

“I knew Janus had identity programs. I didn’t know Michael had been selected.”

Michael looked at Charles’s letter again.

DO NOT BELIEVE THE FIRST PERSON WHO CLAIMS TO BE CHARLES HAYES.

Suddenly, the warning felt different.

Maybe Charles had never been warning him about one old man.

Maybe he had been warning him about the entire system.

Michael’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The caller ID showed a name that made Rachel step backward.

MICHAEL HAYES.

Michael answered.

“Who are you?”

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then Michael heard his own voice.

“You already know.”

Sophie stared at her father.

Lucas stopped moving.

The voice continued.

“I know you burned pancakes last Saturday. I know Lucas pretends he hates hugs when his friends are around. I know Sophie sleeps with the hallway light on when there’s thunder.”

Michael’s face drained.

Rachel grabbed the phone.

“Stay away from my children.”

The stranger laughed.

Even the laugh sounded like Michael.

“Rachel, you still bite the inside of your cheek when you’re frightened.”

She froze.

Michael took the phone back.

“What do you want?”

“To come home.”

“This is my home.”

“That is precisely what Janus intends to test.”

The call disconnected.

A message arrived immediately.

One photograph.

The stranger stood outside a Geneva bank.

Beside him was a woman Michael recognized.

Marianne Vale.

Underneath were six words:

YOUR LIFE HAS ALREADY BEEN TRANSFERRED.

Eleanor went pale.

Michael looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

She swallowed.

“It means the replacement protocol has started.”

Michael glanced toward his children.

“What happens when it finishes?”

Eleanor looked him directly in the eyes.

“Legally, financially, digitally…”

May you like

She hesitated.

“…you stop being Michael Hayes.”
