Eleanor slowly nodded.

Michael slammed the file onto the table.
“Everybody keeps saying that.”
Eleanor didn’t defend herself.
Thomas opened the archived Janus profile.
The first page contained Michael’s childhood photograph.
The second listed his schools.
Friends.
Injuries.
Relationships.
Every major decision had been recorded.
Then Emily reached the final page.
Her face changed.
“Michael.”
“What?”
“There are two columns.”
She turned the screen.
ORIGINAL DEVELOPMENT.
MIRROR DEVELOPMENT.
Michael stared.
The replacement had not been created recently.
Somewhere, another boy had been raised alongside Michael’s life.
When Michael changed schools, Mirror studied the new school.
When Michael met Rachel, Mirror received her profile.
When Lucas was born, Mirror learned how Michael reacted.
Rachel whispered, “They built a parallel husband.”
“A parallel father,” Thomas corrected.
Michael looked disgusted.
“Why?”
Eleanor opened Charles’s letter again.
“Because Janus doesn’t replace random people. It replaces decision points.”
Michael frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“People whose choices can change institutions, fortunes, governments, families.”
Rachel understood.
“If Michael ever made a choice Janus couldn’t control…”
“They would replace him with someone who would.”
Silence.
Michael thought about Orion.

He had dismantled a system instead of inheriting it.
Janus had anticipated that possibility decades earlier.
“That’s why the replacement protocol activated.”
Eleanor nodded.
“You became unpredictable.”
Michael almost laughed.
“So the crime is making my own decisions?”
“To Janus?”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
Then Thomas found another document.
MIRROR ACTIVATION CONDITIONS.
Condition One: Hayes network collapse.

Thomas stopped reading.
Michael stepped closer.
“What?”
Thomas looked at Rachel.
“Family verification.”
Michael frowned.
“What does that mean?”
A message appeared on Rachel’s phone.

The replacement stood beside Marianne Vale.
Marianne looked terrified.
The man with Michael’s face spoke.
“Rachel, you decide which Michael survives.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
The replacement continued.
“Come to Geneva alone.”
“No,” Michael said.
The screen couldn’t hear him.
But the replacement smiled as though it could.
“Because if you don’t…”
Marianne was pulled aside.
Behind her stood Dr. Elias Ward.
And beside him was another person.
An elderly man.
Michael stared.
Charles Hayes.
The old man looked directly into the camera.
Then spoke.
“Michael.”
His voice trembled.
