Chapter 1 - THE SOUND BEHIND THE WALL “WHERE IS MY SON?”

Julian Mercer’s voice cut through the music like a knife.

For half a second, the ballroom of Blackwood Manor seemed to stop breathing.

Then the string quartet continued playing, champagne glasses touched beneath crystal chandeliers, and two hundred elegantly dressed guests returned to conversations about elections, investments, summer homes, and fortunes most ordinary families would never see.

But Julian heard none of it.

Seven-year-old Toby was missing.

Julian moved through the crowded ballroom, forcing himself to smile whenever another guest approached.

Tonight was supposed to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Mercer Properties, the real-estate empire Julian had inherited from his father.

Instead, every instinct inside him was screaming that something was wrong.

He checked his watch.

8:47 p.m.

Toby had disappeared more than an hour earlier.

Julian found his wife beside the grand staircase.

Evelyn Mercer looked breathtaking beneath the chandelier light.

Her silver silk gown shimmered with every movement, and diamonds surrounded her throat.

She was laughing with Senator Whitmore and several prominent investors when Julian approached.

“Evelyn.”

Something in his voice made her turn.

“Have you seen Toby?”

Her smile barely changed.

“He’s probably upstairs.”

“I checked.”

“Then he’s playing somewhere.”

“I checked the gardens too.”

Evelyn touched his arm.

“Julian, please. We have two hundred guests watching us.”

He stared at her.

“Our son is missing.”

“And panicking publicly won’t find him.”

Something about her calmness bothered him.

Not what she said.

How she said it.

Julian pulled away.

“Toby!”

His voice echoed through the west corridor.

No answer.

He opened the library.

Empty.

The music room.

Empty.

The upstairs guest rooms.

Empty.

Then he reached the long hallway behind the drawing room, where the laughter from the party became distant.

“Toby?”

Silence.

Julian was about to turn around when he heard it.

THUMP.

He froze.

The sound had come from somewhere nearby.

Then—

THUMP.

Julian slowly turned toward the drawing room.

Guests were beginning to notice something strange.

Several had stopped talking.

Then a woman screamed.

“STOP HER!”

Julian rushed through the doorway.

What he saw made no sense.

Elena Ramirez, the family’s quiet housekeeper, stood beside an enormous decorative wall covered by a vintage tapestry.

In her hands was a steel demolition hammer.

“Elena?”

Her face was wet with sweat.

Her hands were trembling.

But her eyes held absolute determination.

“Move away, Mr. Mercer.”

“What are you doing?”

“There’s someone behind this wall.”

A nervous laugh came from somewhere among the guests.

Julian didn’t laugh.

Evelyn rushed into the room.

“What is happening?”

Elena lifted the hammer.

Evelyn’s face changed.

“Put that down!”

“Ma’am—”

“Security!”

Two guards started forward.

Elena swung.

CRASH!

The hammer smashed through the immaculate white drywall.

Guests screamed.

Plaster exploded across the marble.

“Elena!” Julian shouted.

But she lifted the hammer again.

Evelyn grabbed Julian’s arm.

“She’s lost her mind!”

Then Julian heard something.

Weak.

Almost impossible to hear.

A sound from behind the broken wall.

He raised one hand.

“Everybody quiet.”

The room fell silent.

Julian stepped toward the crack.

He pressed his ear against the wall.

Nothing.

Then—

a sob.

Julian’s heart stopped.

He knew that sound.

“Toby?”

Silence.

“Toby!”

A tiny voice answered from inside the darkness.

“Daddy?”

Julian staggered backward.

Several guests gasped.

Evelyn’s fingers suddenly tightened around her purse.

Julian pressed himself against the wall.

“I’m here, buddy!”

“Daddy… please.”

Toby’s voice sounded weak.

“I can’t breathe.”

Something primitive awakened inside Julian.

He turned toward Elena.

“Give me the hammer.”

She handed it over immediately.

Julian looked once at his wife.

For the first time that evening, Evelyn wasn’t worried about appearances.

She looked terrified.

Not terrified for Toby.

Terrified of what Julian was about to discover.

Julian raised the hammer.

And brought it down.

CRASH!

The wall split wider.

From somewhere inside that darkness, Toby screamed.

May you like

And Julian realized this was no accident.

Someone had put his son there.
