Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE MANSION FELL The mansion doors opened.

Two police officers entered first.

Paramedics followed carrying emergency equipment.

Guests automatically moved aside.

For decades, Blackwood Manor had represented Mercer power.

Tonight its marble halls looked less like a palace and more like a crime scene.

Officer Daniel Reeves approached Julian.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“Where’s the child?”

Julian indicated Toby.

Paramedics immediately moved toward them.

Toby panicked.

“Daddy!”

“I’m staying.”

Julian carried him to a nearby sofa.

A paramedic checked his breathing, pulse, oxygen level, and temperature.

“He’s dehydrated and overheated.”

Julian’s stomach tightened.

“Is he okay?”

“He appears stable, but we’re taking him to the hospital.”

Across the room, Officer Reeves examined the broken wall.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“Mrs. Mercer?”

She straightened instinctively.

“Yes.”

“We need to ask you some questions.”

“My attorney should be present.”

“That’s your right.”

Julian watched her transformation.

Within seconds, Evelyn’s panic disappeared behind the polished mask she had worn for years.

But Toby saw her.

He pointed.

“She locked me in there.”

The mask cracked.

Officer Reeves crouched near Toby.

“Can you tell me what happened?”

Julian interrupted.

“Does he have to do this now?”

“No.”

Reeves nodded.

“We can speak with him later under appropriate conditions.”

That small act of restraint mattered to Julian.

For the first time that night, someone was thinking about what Toby needed instead of what Toby could provide.

Elena approached another officer.

“I witnessed part of it.”

The officer began taking her statement.

Evelyn watched.

“Elena.”

The housekeeper ignored her.

“Elena!”

She finally turned.

“You’re destroying this family.”

Elena stared at her.

“No, ma’am.”

Her voice was steady.

“I broke a wall.”

“You did the rest.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Evelyn’s expression twisted.

“You think they care about you?”

Elena didn’t respond.

“You’re staff.”

Julian stepped between them.

“She saved my son.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“And now she’ll become the hero while I become a monster.”

Julian shook his head.

“This isn’t a story someone invented about you.”

He pointed toward the shattered wall.

“You made choices.”

Officer Reeves approached.

“Mrs. Mercer, based on the statements and physical evidence, we need you to come with us.”

Evelyn backed away.

“No.”

“Please turn around.”

“Julian.”

He said nothing.

“Julian, please.”

For a moment, he saw the woman he had married.

The young woman who once danced barefoot with him in their first apartment.

The woman who held newborn Toby and cried because she had never seen anything so beautiful.

Julian wondered where that woman had gone.

Maybe she hadn’t disappeared suddenly.

Maybe people changed one compromise at a time.

One lie.

One rationalization.

One decision to value status over love.

Until eventually they became someone even they could no longer recognize.

The handcuffs clicked.

Evelyn flinched.

Toby buried his face against Julian.

“Don’t look,” Julian whispered.

He carried his son toward the ambulance.

Outside, reporters were already gathering beyond the gates.

Camera flashes exploded through the darkness.

Julian shielded Toby’s face.

“Mr. Mercer!”

“What happened?”

“Was your son kidnapped?”

“Is Mrs. Mercer under arrest?”

Julian ignored them.

The ambulance doors opened.

Before climbing inside, Toby looked back at the mansion.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“I don’t want to live there anymore.”

Julian followed his son’s gaze.

The enormous house glowed against the night sky.

For years, Julian had believed it represented everything he was supposed to protect.

Legacy.

Wealth.

Family.

Now all he saw was a beautiful prison.

He kissed Toby’s forehead.

“We won’t.”

And for the first time in generations, a Mercer walked away from Blackwood Manor without looking back.
