Chapter 1 - The Fall The scream tore through the house so violently that everyone froze.

“MY BABY!”
Sarah’s voice echoed down the marble staircase.
It was followed by the sound of something hitting the wooden railing.
Then a tiny, terrified cry.
Maria looked up.
For one horrifying second, she saw the baby suspended near the top of the staircase, slipping from Sarah’s arms.
Everything happened too quickly.
Sarah reached for him.
Her fingers caught only the edge of his blanket.
The baby rolled.
His tiny body tipped forward.
Then gravity took over.
“NO!”
Maria ran.
She did not think about the stairs.
She did not think about the marble floor.
She did not think about what would happen if she missed.
She only saw the baby.
Three steps.
Two.
One.
Maria threw herself forward.
Her shoulder slammed against the bottom step as she stretched both arms upward.
She caught him.
The baby struck her chest instead of the floor.
Maria twisted her body instinctively, taking the impact herself.
They collapsed together.
For half a second, the entire house went silent.
Then the baby began screaming.
Maria pulled him close.
“You’re okay. You’re okay. I have you.”
Her hands trembled.
Her shoulder burned.
Blood was already forming beneath the sleeve of her uniform.
But the baby was alive.
Safe.
Then footsteps thundered through the hallway.
Daniel Carter appeared.
The baby’s father.
His face was pale with terror.
“What happened?”
Maria looked up.
“I caught him.”
Daniel saw only one thing.
Maria.
On the floor.
Holding his screaming son.
Sarah standing halfway up the staircase.
Daniel’s expression changed instantly.
“What did you do?”
Maria blinked.
“What?”
“You dropped my son!”
“No!”
Daniel lunged forward and snatched the baby from her arms.
“Daniel, wait!” Maria cried. “I caught him! He was falling!”
“You were holding him!”
“I caught him!”
Sarah stumbled down the stairs.
Her face was wet with tears.
“She had him,” Sarah whispered.
Maria stared at her.
“Yes. Because I saved him.”
Sarah said nothing.
Then Daniel shouted, “Olivia!”
Their twelve-year-old daughter came running from the library.
“What happened?”
Daniel pointed toward Maria.
“She dropped Noah.”
Maria’s heart seemed to stop.
“That isn’t true.”
Olivia looked confused.
“I saw her downstairs.”
“She dropped him!” Daniel repeated.
Maria stood slowly.
Her shoulder throbbed.
“No, Mr. Carter. Please. Check the security cameras.”
Daniel froze.
“The cameras?”
“Yes.”
Maria pointed toward the security room.
“The camera saw everything.”
Daniel hesitated.
Then his eyes hardened.
“Fine.”
They rushed into the security room.
Four screens covered the wall.
The staircase camera showed Sarah near the top.
The timestamp was clear.
10:17:41 PM.
Then Sarah lost her grip.
Noah slipped.
Maria entered the frame.
She jumped.
She caught him.
Everyone watched in silence.
Daniel’s breathing slowed.
His face drained of color.
Then Olivia whispered,
“Dad…”
Daniel did not answer.
The footage continued.
Maria caught Noah only inches above the marble floor.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at the screen.
He had just accused the woman who saved his son.
He turned toward Maria.
“I…”
His voice broke.
“I’m sorry.”
Maria looked at him.
She wanted to say something.
Instead, Noah reached one tiny hand toward her.
Daniel saw it.
Maria’s eyes filled with tears.
She stepped closer.
The baby grabbed her finger.
For one quiet moment, everything seemed forgiven.
Then Olivia noticed something on the monitor.
“Dad.”
Her voice had changed.
Daniel looked back.
“What?”
Olivia pointed toward the timestamp.
“There’s something wrong.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Olivia zoomed in.
The staircase camera showed Sarah losing her grip.
It showed Maria running.
It showed the rescue.
But between two frames, there was a gap.
Eleven seconds.
May you like
Eleven missing seconds.
And someone had deleted them.
