Chapter 11 - The Man at the GateDaniel ran toward the front door.

“NOAH!”
The man stood under the security light.
He didn't run.
He didn't threaten.
He simply held the baby.
Noah was wrapped in a white blanket.
He wasn't crying.
Daniel stopped several feet away.
“Put him down.”
The man smiled faintly.
“You've finally started asking the right questions.”
“Who are you?”
“You know.”
“I don't.”
The man raised his wrist.
The silver watch caught the light.
“My name is Victor Hale.”
Maria's eyes widened.
She had seen that name before.
In the hidden files.
Daniel stared.
“Victor Hale?”
Victor smiled.
“Your father's business partner.”
Daniel shook his head.
“My father had no business partner named Victor.”
“That is what he wanted everyone to believe.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“Where did you get my son?”
Victor looked at her.
“I didn't take him.”
“Then why are you holding him?”
“Because he was left with me.”
Daniel's face twisted.
“By whom?”
Victor looked past them.
Toward the house.
“By someone you trust.”
Maria's pulse quickened.
Victor turned slightly.
“You still think this is about Ethan.”
Daniel said nothing.
Victor continued.
“Ethan is dangerous, but he isn't the mastermind.”
“Who is?”
Victor smiled.
“You don't want to know.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I'll decide that.”
Victor looked at him.
“Your father built a fortune on one secret.”
“What secret?”
“That he wasn't the man you believed him to be.”
Sarah whispered,
“What does that have to do with Noah?”
“Everything.”
Victor gently handed Noah to Daniel.
Daniel grabbed his son immediately.
Victor stepped back.
“He was safe with me.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“You shouldn't.”
Victor glanced at Maria.
“She knows why.”
Maria froze.
“What do I know?”
Victor smiled.
“You've been working in this house for three years.”
“Yes.”
“You think you were hired because you needed a job.”
“Yes.”
“That isn't why.”
Daniel looked at Maria.
“What is he talking about?”
Victor turned away.
Maria suddenly noticed the tattoo on his hand.
A silver triangle.
She had seen it in the files.
The hidden network.
The people connected to Daniel's father.
She grabbed Victor's arm.
“Where is Grace?”
Victor stopped.
For the first time, his smile disappeared.
“You shouldn't know that name.”
Maria's voice shook.
“She trained me.”
Victor stared at her.
Then whispered,
“Grace chose you.”
“What does that mean?”
Victor looked toward the house.
“She knew this day would come.”
He stepped back.
“I only came because she told me to make sure Noah survived tonight.”
Daniel held the baby tighter.
“Where is she?”
Victor didn't answer.
Instead, he said:
“Ask Maria who her father was.”
Maria went completely still.
“My father?”
Victor nodded.
“He wasn't the man you thought.”
Then Victor walked toward his car.
Daniel shouted,
“Stop!”
Victor looked back.
“Check the old records.”
The car disappeared into the darkness.
Maria stood motionless.
Daniel looked at her.
“What did he mean?”
Maria shook her head.
“I don't know.”
But deep inside, a memory had just awakened.
A memory she had spent years trying to forget.
Her father had once worked for the Carter family.

And the last time Maria had seen him alive…
he had been wearing the same silver triangle.
