CHAPTER 4 — THE FATHER IN THE DARK

CHAPTER 4 — THE FATHER IN THE DARK
Daniel had imagined this moment a thousand different ways since seeing the photograph.
None looked like this.
Richard Cross sat behind a steel table in a room beneath the ruins of Warehouse Seventeen.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably alive.
Lily slept inside a crib beside him.
Daniel held his pistol steadily.
“Move away from my daughter.”
Richard smiled.
“You always did skip hello.”
“You’ve been dead nine years.”
“Officially.”
“Move.”
Richard stood.
Daniel’s finger tightened against the trigger.
“Slowly.”
Richard stepped away from Lily.
Daniel crossed the room.
He checked his daughter.
Breathing.
Warm.
Unharmed.
Relief almost broke him.
He lifted her carefully.
Richard watched.
“You became a better father than I expected.”
Daniel turned.
“You don’t get to talk about fatherhood.”
“No?”
“You abandoned your sons.”
“I saved them.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You tried to kill Charles.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“Is that what Rebecca told you?”
“She left evidence.”
“Rebecca left fragments.”
Richard walked toward a wall.
Daniel raised the gun.
“Stop.”
Richard stopped.
“You want answers?”
“I want my daughter.”
“You have her.”
“I want to leave.”
“The door locked when you entered.”
Daniel glanced behind him.
Richard smiled.
“You came exactly as instructed.”
Daniel hated himself for it.
Richard touched a control.
A wall monitor illuminated.
Security footage appeared.
Daniel recognized the ballroom.
Different angle.
Evelyn carrying Lily.
A black-gloved man behind her.
The man pushed her.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Richard froze the image.
“Recognize him?”
The face remained partially hidden.
“No.”
Richard removed the mask digitally.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Marcus Hale.
His security chief.
“No.”
Richard said nothing.
“That’s fake.”
“Is it?”
“Marcus was downstairs.”
“After the fall.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Richard changed footage.
Hospital parking garage.
Marcus speaking to one of Daniel’s security officers.
Timestamp twenty minutes before Lily disappeared.
Daniel felt physically ill.
“No.”
“Loyalty is expensive, son.”
“Marcus has protected my family for eleven years.”
“Exactly.”
Richard stepped closer.
“He knows every camera. Every route. Every password.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
Someone Daniel trusted.
Someone who knew his children.
Rebecca’s warning.
Daniel whispered:
“Why?”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“Because Marcus Hale is not Marcus Hale.”
Daniel stared.
“His real name is Marcus Vale.”
The surname meant nothing.
Then Richard added:
“Rebecca’s half brother.”
Daniel’s world tilted.
“What?”
“Rebecca never told you?”
“No.”
“Of course not.”
Richard looked almost disappointed.
“Your marriage had more secrets than mine.”
Daniel struggled to process it.
“Marcus kidnapped Lily?”
“He arranged it.”
“Why?”
“To bring you here.”
“You sent the messages.”
“No.”
Daniel froze.
Richard pointed toward the phone.
“I received the same invitation.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Richard reached into his jacket.
Daniel raised the gun.
Richard slowly removed a phone.
On its screen:
MIDNIGHT. COME HEAR WHY YOUR SON HAS TO DIE TWICE.
Daniel stared.
Someone had summoned both of them.
Father.
Son.
Same location.
Different lies.
Then a speaker crackled overhead.
Applause echoed.
Slow.
Deliberate.
A voice followed.
“Beautiful.”
Daniel recognized it instantly.
Marcus.
Richard looked upward.
“Right on time.”
Daniel shouted:
“Marcus!”
The voice laughed.
“You finally made it, Daniel.”
“Open the door.”
“No.”
“You touch my family—”
“Your family touched mine first.”
Daniel froze.
Marcus continued.
“Rebecca found Richard’s operation. She tried to expose it.”
Richard shouted:
“That isn’t what happened!”
Marcus ignored him.
“She died because of this family.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Did you kill her?”
Richard said nothing.
“DID YOU KILL REBECCA?”
Richard’s silence became an answer.
Daniel’s gun shifted toward his father.
Richard raised his hands.
“I didn’t order her death.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“I caused it.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with rage.
“How?”
Richard looked toward Lily.
“Rebecca stole records. She was being followed. She panicked on the highway.”
Daniel felt sick.
“You had men chasing her.”
“Yes.”
“She crashed because of you.”
“Yes.”
Daniel almost fired.
Marcus’s voice interrupted.
“And now you understand.”
Daniel stared at Richard.
“You destroyed my family.”
Richard’s face tightened.
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“From the truth.”
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
“That is the most insane thing you’ve said.”
Richard stepped forward.
“The money laundering wasn’t theft.”
“Then what was it?”
“Payments.”
“To whom?”
“Federal assets. Foreign intermediaries. Witnesses.”
Daniel frowned.
Richard continued.
“Cross Industries was being used as a financial channel for operations that were never supposed to exist.”
Daniel stared.
“You expect me to believe you were working for the government?”
“Parts of it.”
“Convenient.”
“Very.”
Marcus laughed through the speaker.
“Ask him about Chicago Harbor.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
Richard’s face changed.
That was enough.
“What happened at Chicago Harbor?”
Richard said nothing.
Marcus answered.
“Thirty-one people died.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Because Richard decided protecting his network mattered more than protecting innocent people.”
Richard shouted:
“You don’t know what happened!”
“I know Rebecca discovered it.”
Marcus’s voice cracked for the first time.
“And I know she died trying to expose him.”
Daniel looked at his father.
“Is that true?”
Richard slowly nodded.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Everything Rebecca had feared.
Everything Evelyn had hidden.
Everything Charles had tried to uncover.
It all led here.
Marcus continued.
“But killing Richard isn’t enough.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What do you want?”
“I want Cross Industries destroyed.”
“Then take it.”
Richard turned sharply.
“Daniel.”
Daniel ignored him.
“Take every dollar.”
Marcus laughed.
“You still think this is about money.”
“What then?”
“Confession.”
Monitors around the room activated.
Cameras.
Live stream indicators.
Marcus had built a broadcast.
Richard understood first.
“He wants me to confess publicly.”
“Yes.”
Marcus’s voice became cold.
“And then Daniel gets to choose.”
Daniel looked upward.
“Choose what?”
A steel door opened.
On the other side stood Sophie.
Evelyn beside her.
Charles behind them.
Marcus held a gun.
Daniel’s blood stopped.
“No.”
May you like
Marcus smiled.
“Welcome to phase three.”
