CHAPTER 10 — THE FATHER BEHIND THE EMPIRE

“DANIEL, IF YOU CAN HEAR ME, DON’T TRUST YOUR MOTHER.”
Thomas Vale’s voice rolled through the darkness.
Grace buried her face against Daniel’s shoulder.
Emergency lights flickered red along the floor.
Agent Carter raised her weapon.
“Everybody stay behind cover.”
Margaret whispered:
“He’s trying to separate us.”
Daniel looked toward her.
“That seems to be a family tradition.”
A crash sounded upstairs.
Then gunfire.
Carter’s radio came alive.
“Perimeter breached!”
“How many?”
“Unknown!”
Daniel held Grace tighter.
The little girl trembled.
He suddenly understood something with absolute clarity.
He did not care who his biological father was.
He cared who frightened his children.
And Thomas Vale had just crossed that line.
“Get Grace out.”
Carter shook her head.
“Every exit may be compromised.”
Margaret pointed toward a steel cabinet.
“There’s another tunnel.”
Daniel stared.
“How many secret passages does this family need?”
“Apparently one more.”
Margaret opened the cabinet.
Behind it was a narrow concrete passage.
Carter sent two agents first.
Daniel followed with Grace.
Margaret came behind them.
The tunnel sloped toward the shoreline.
Halfway through, Daniel’s phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Thomas.”
The man laughed softly.
“So Margaret told you.”
“You came armed to a house containing a five-year-old.”
“I came to recover what was stolen.”
“She isn’t property.”
“I wasn’t talking about Grace.”
Daniel stopped walking.
“What do you want?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard spent your entire life convincing you that you were ordinary.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“I’m a billionaire whose family built a criminal network. Ordinary wasn’t exactly available.”
Thomas sounded amused.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
“You inherited Cross Industries.”
“Not anymore.”
“You dismantled Richard’s network.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed thirty years of infrastructure in six months.”
“Your point?”
“You did what federal investigators couldn’t.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t make me special.”
“No.”
Thomas paused.
“It makes you dangerous.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Margaret had heard everything.
“He wants you to replace him.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Replace Thomas?”
“He’s old.”
“So?”
“Networks like his require succession.”
Daniel resumed walking.
“He can keep looking.”
Margaret caught his arm.
“You don’t understand men like Thomas.”
Daniel turned.
“I understand them perfectly.”
His voice lowered.
“Richard thought family meant ownership. Charles thought protection justified crimes. Marcus thought pain gave him permission to hurt people.”
Daniel looked toward the tunnel exit.
“And Thomas thinks blood gives him rights over my children.”
He shook his head.
“They’re all wrong.”
The tunnel opened near an abandoned boathouse.
Federal vehicles were visible farther down the shoreline.
Carter’s backup had arrived.
Daniel stepped outside.
Then a rifle laser appeared on his chest.
Carter shouted.
“DOWN!”
Daniel dropped, shielding Grace.
A shot cracked.
Wood exploded behind them.
Agents returned fire.
Margaret crawled toward Daniel.
“Give me Grace!”
“No!”
“Daniel, you need both hands!”
Another bullet struck the dock.
Daniel handed Grace to Carter instead.
“Get her to Evelyn.”
Carter nodded.
Margaret protested.
“Daniel!”
He looked at his mother.
“You’ve protected her for five years.”
Margaret’s face softened.
“Thank you.”
“Now let me protect you.”
They moved behind the boathouse.
Three black SUVs blocked the road.
Men in tactical clothing surrounded them.
Then the rear door of the middle vehicle opened.
An elderly man stepped out.
No weapon.
Silver hair.
Dark overcoat.
Daniel stared.
Thomas Vale looked like Charles aged thirty years.
Same jaw.
Same eyes.
Same controlled posture.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
For a moment, something almost human appeared in his expression.
“My son.”
Daniel felt nothing.
“You don’t get to call me that.”
Thomas nodded.
“Richard raised you.”
“Evelyn and my daughters made me who I am.”
Thomas smiled.
“Good answer.”
“This isn’t an interview.”
“No.”
Thomas looked toward Margaret.
“It’s a reunion.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“You should have stayed dead.”
“So should you.”
Daniel looked between them.
“You both seem terrible at it.”
Thomas almost smiled.
Then Carter’s voice came from behind the federal barricade.
“Thomas Vale! Put your hands where we can see them!”
Thomas ignored her.
“Daniel, come with me.”
“No.”
“I can explain everything.”
“Try explaining it from where you’re standing.”
Thomas studied him.
“Lily was never supposed to remain with you.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“That sentence alone guarantees I’m not taking another step.”
“She was created for a purpose.”
“She’s a child.”
“Yes.”
“That’s her purpose.”
Thomas’s expression shifted.
For the first time, Daniel saw irritation.
“You sound like Margaret.”
“Good.”
Thomas looked toward her.
“She always confused love with weakness.”
Margaret laughed.
“And you always confused control with strength.”
Thomas raised one hand.
His armed men lowered their weapons slightly.
Carter’s agents remained ready.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Ask Margaret why she disappeared.”
Daniel did.
Margaret didn’t answer.
Thomas continued.
“She didn’t hide from Richard.”
Margaret whispered:
“Stop.”
“She hid from you.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
Thomas smiled.
“Now we’re finally telling the truth.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, this isn’t the place.”
“You chose the place twelve years ago.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Why did you hide from me?”
Margaret lowered her head.
“Because I helped Richard.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“With what?”
“The embryo program.”
Grace was already far enough away not to hear.
Still, Daniel lowered his voice.
“You participated?”
“In the beginning.”
“Why?”
“I believed we were helping families.”
Thomas laughed.
“You knew exactly what we were doing.”
Margaret turned on him.
“Not at first.”
“But eventually.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped backward.
Another parent.
Another lie.
“How many children?”
Margaret whispered:
“Seventeen while I was involved.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“And when you discovered what it really was?”
“I tried to destroy it.”
“The warehouse fire.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared.
“Charles said he caused it.”
“He started the fire.”
“But you were there intentionally.”
“Yes.”
“So Charles didn’t accidentally expose you.”
“No.”
“I went there to steal the records.”
Daniel remembered Charles’s confession.
Parts of it.
Always parts.
Never everything.
Thomas watched him carefully.
“You see the pattern now.”
Daniel turned.
“What pattern?”
“They all lie to you.”
“And you don’t?”
Thomas smiled.
“I lie constantly.”
The honesty was almost more disturbing.
“But unlike them, I won’t insult you by pretending otherwise.”
Daniel stared at him.
Thomas continued.
“Richard wanted my network.”
“Why?”
“Because the Cross fortune was collapsing.”
Daniel frowned.
Cross Industries had always seemed invincible.
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandfather left Richard an empire drowning in hidden debt.”
“So Richard partnered with you.”
“Yes.”
“And married Margaret.”
“To gain access to me.”
Margaret’s expression darkened.
“He blackmailed me.”
Thomas looked almost amused.
“Richard was very persuasive.”
Daniel finally understood.
Richard had built the Cross network using Vale connections.
Then attempted to eliminate Thomas.
Thomas disappeared.
Margaret tried to expose both men.
Charles inherited pieces without understanding their origin.
Rebecca discovered the genetic records.
Everyone spent decades protecting themselves by lying to the next generation.
Daniel looked toward Thomas.
“It ends.”
Thomas raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“All of it.”
“You think dismantling Cross Industries ended anything?”
“No.”
Daniel looked toward Carter.
“But handing your records to federal investigators might.”
Thomas laughed.
“You don’t have my records.”
Margaret reached inside her coat.
She removed a small metal key.
Thomas stopped smiling.
Daniel noticed.
“What is that?”
Margaret looked at Thomas.
“The reason he hasn’t killed me.”
Thomas’s men raised their weapons.
Federal agents responded instantly.
Carter shouted.
“DON’T MOVE!”
Margaret held the key higher.
“This opens the original Vale archive.”
Thomas’s voice changed.
“Margaret.”
“Forty years of names.”
“Put it down.”
“Judges.”
“Margaret.”
“Senators.”
Daniel watched Thomas.
“Police commissioners.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“Enough.”
“Corporate boards.”
Daniel understood.
This was bigger than Cross Industries.
Margaret handed Daniel the key.
Thomas stared at him.
“Son.”
Daniel closed his fist around it.
“Wrong word.”
Thomas’s face hardened.
“Give me the key.”
“No.”
“I can make your daughters disappear before sunset.”
Daniel’s expression became completely still.
Carter’s agents shifted.
Thomas realized too late what he had said.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You wanted to know whether Richard made me weak?”
Thomas said nothing.
Daniel pointed toward the federal agents.
“I spent my entire life surrounded by men who thought fear was power.”
His voice remained calm.
“Richard.”
“Charles.”
“Marcus.”
“And now you.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You all made the same mistake.”
Thomas narrowed his eyes.
“What mistake?”
“You thought protecting family meant controlling them.”
Daniel looked toward the vehicle carrying Grace away.
“It means giving them a life where they never have to become you.”
Sirens approached from every direction.
Thomas looked toward the road.
More federal vehicles appeared.
His expression changed.
Carter smiled faintly.
“We traced your convoy twenty minutes ago.”
Thomas’s men began lowering their weapons.
One by one.
Thomas remained still.
Carter approached.
“Thomas Vale, you are under arrest.”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“This doesn’t end anything.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
Thomas smiled.
“Good.”
Agents placed him in handcuffs.
Before entering the vehicle, Thomas looked back.
“Ask Evelyn about the night Lily was born.”
Daniel froze.
Thomas’s smile widened.
“Ask her who she saw in the operating room.”
Then the door closed.
Daniel turned toward Margaret.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“You know what he meant.”
Margaret whispered:
“Yes.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Evelyn.
He answered immediately.
“Are the girls safe?”
“Yes.”
Her voice shook.
“Grace is here.”
Daniel closed his eyes with relief.
Then Evelyn continued.
“But Daniel…”
“What?”
“I remembered something.”
He looked at Margaret.
“What did you remember?”
“The nurse who handed Lily to me.”
Daniel waited.
Evelyn whispered:
“She wasn’t a nurse.”
Daniel’s heart began pounding.
“Who was she?”
A long silence.
May you like
Then Evelyn said:
“Rebecca.”
