Chapter 18 - Justice Justice came slowly.

It never looked like the movies.

There was no single moment when everything suddenly felt right.

There were hearings.

Documents.

Lawyers.

Interviews.

Bank audits.

Court appearances.

Weeks became months.

Marcus Hale pleaded guilty to manslaughter, conspiracy, falsifying medical records, and fraud.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to conspiracy, obstruction, fraud, kidnapping-related charges, and crimes connected to Claire's death.

Elliot initially demanded a trial.

Then prosecutors showed his attorney the lake-house footage.

His position changed immediately.

He accepted a plea agreement that would send him to prison for decades.

The money stolen from Carter Meridian was recovered piece by piece.

The subsidiary sale was reversed.

Claire's shares were placed under legal protection for Noah.

But none of it brought her back.

One morning, I visited Vanessa in prison.

I didn't know why I went.

Maybe I needed to see the woman who had destroyed my family without the luxury of pretending she was someone else.

She sat across from me.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Do you hate me?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

I stood.

Then she said:

“Daniel.”

I stopped.

“Claire knew you would eventually open that drawer.”

I turned.

“What?”

“She told me once that the day you stopped trusting the comfortable version of your life would be the day you finally saw the truth.”

I said nothing.

Vanessa looked down.

“She was right.”

I walked away.

May you like

For the first time, I didn't feel victorious.

I felt finished.
