Chapter 1 - The CaneThe first thing I saw when I opened my front door was my wife standing over my nephew with my dead father's cane raised above her head.

The first thing I saw when I opened my front door was my wife standing over my nephew with my dead father's cane raised above her head.
For half a second, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
Noah was thirteen. He had both arms wrapped around Lily, my five-year-old daughter, shielding her against the hallway wall.
Lily was sobbing.
Vanessa was three feet away, gripping the black walnut cane so tightly that the veins stood out across the back of her hand.
“Put it down.”
She turned toward me.
“Daniel, you don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Her breathing was fast.
“Put. It. Down.”
Something in my voice made her hesitate.
I crossed the foyer, pulled Lily behind me, and shoved Noah gently toward the kitchen.
Vanessa stared at him.
“He went into your office.”
Noah's face was pale.
“Uncle Dan—”
“Not now.”
Lily clutched my shirt.
“Daddy… files. Noah found files.”
Vanessa lowered the cane.
Then her phone rang.
She snatched it from the entry table.
“Hello?”
A man's voice came through the speaker.
“Did Carter see the death certificate?”
Everything inside me went still.
Vanessa froze.
The man spoke again.
“Vanessa?”
She ended the call.
Too late.
I looked at my wife.
“What death certificate?”
“It was nothing.”
Noah pointed toward my office.
“Top drawer. Under the tax folders.”
Vanessa suddenly lunged.
I caught her wrist.
The cane slipped from her fingers and crashed against the marble floor.
Lily screamed.
“Don't,” I whispered.
For one strange second, Vanessa's face changed.
The anger disappeared.
So did the fear.
What remained was something colder.
I walked into my office.
My father's old desk stood exactly where it had for twenty years.
I pulled open the top drawer.
Tax documents.
Insurance papers.
Old receipts.
And beneath them, a manila folder I had never seen before.
Inside was a certified medical death certificate.
CLAIRE MARIE CARTER.
My sister.
Date of death: thirteen months earlier.
Cause: complications from blunt-force head trauma.
Physician: Dr. Marcus Hale.
My father's former private physician.
And now, one of the most powerful members of Carter Meridian's board.
My hands began shaking.
For thirteen months, I had received emails from Claire.
Bank notices.
Angry messages.
One final warning telling me not to look for her.
I had believed she had abandoned us.
Now I was holding proof that she had supposedly been dead the entire time.
I returned to the hallway.
“Where is Claire?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Where is my sister?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
Her lips tightened.
“Why do you have this?”
She looked at me.
Then at Noah.
Then at the folder.
Finally, she whispered:
“It wasn't how you were supposed to find out.”
A door slammed somewhere in the back of the house.
Vanessa's shoulders suddenly relaxed.
She looked relieved.

And that was the moment I realized something far worse than the death certificate was happening.
Someone else was inside my house.
