Chapter 19 - Claire's Name Six months later, we held Claire's memorial beside the lake.

The morning was cold and bright.
My mother sat beside Noah.
She had a good day.
She remembered him immediately.
That was enough.
Lily carried a yellow flower.
She placed it beside Claire's urn.
“Is Aunt Claire in heaven?”
I knelt beside her.
“I hope so.”
Noah stood near the water.
He was wearing the leather bracelet.
The proxy token was gone.
The bracelet was empty.
But he kept wearing it.
I walked toward him.
“You okay?”
He nodded.
“Mom would have hated this weather.”
I laughed.
“She hated cold mornings.”
“She hated everything before coffee.”
“That too.”
For the first time in thirteen months, we laughed about Claire without feeling guilty.
Later, everyone left.
Noah and I stayed on the dock.
“Do you still think she was mad at you?” he asked.
“Probably.”
He smiled.
“She could stay mad a long time.”
“World-class.”
The lake moved gently beneath us.
I touched Claire's name on the memorial stone.
“I'm sorry I was late.”
Noah stood beside me.
“You found her.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He shook his head.
“No. She found us.”
I didn't correct him.
Because maybe he was right.
Claire had left clues in every place we had forgotten to look.
The drawer.
The compass.
The bracelet.
The thirteen messages.
The lake house.

She had spent her final days making sure that someday, somehow, the truth would survive her.
And it had.
