Chapter 5 - THE EVIDENCE THAT LIED The million-dollar account was fake.
Not the money.
Not the transactions.
The ownership.
A forensic accountant discovered Julian’s identity had been used without his knowledge.
The digital authorization originated from Arthur’s office.
Arthur had created a financial trail designed to make Julian look like Dominic’s murderer.
Dominic stared at his brother.
“You didn’t take the money.”
“No.”
“But you still helped him.”
Julian nodded.
“Yes.”
There would be no easy forgiveness.
Dominic refused to pretend betrayal disappeared simply because it was smaller than attempted murder.
Julian would lose his position.
He would cooperate with investigators.
And when everything ended, the brothers would decide whether anything remained between them.
That night, Ellie discovered something else.
A black square attached to the back of her wooden latch board.
Vincent examined it.
A tracking device.
Peter had been tracking a four-year-old child inside Dominic’s mansion.
But not because Arthur feared what Ellie had seen.
He feared what she had heard.
Ellie remembered Arthur talking on the phone.
“Burn the book.”
Dominic searched his father’s untouched study.
Hours passed.
Nothing.
Then Ellie entered.
She looked at the shelves.
“That book is backward.”
Dominic pulled it free.
Inside was a hollow compartment.
And inside that compartment—
A handwritten ledger.
His dead father’s ledger.
Arthur’s name appeared throughout it.
Hidden payments.
Missing money.
Secret meetings.
Then Dominic reached the final pages.
His father had discovered Arthur stealing from the organization shortly before his death.
Officially, Dominic’s father died from a heart attack.
But beneath the final entry, someone else had written:
HE FOUND OUT.
WE HANDLED IT.
Dominic slowly closed the book.
