Chapter 6 - THE VOTE THAT BECAME A TRAP Forty-eight hours later, Arthur walked into the council room believing Dominic was cornered.

Instead, Dominic was waiting.

So were Angela.

Vincent.

Julian.

Investigators.

And the evidence.

Arthur demanded his vote.

Dominic gave him one.

But not the vote Arthur expected.

Angela testified.

The security records were displayed.

Peter’s messages appeared on the screen.

Raymond Pike—the driver responsible for Dominic’s crash—had been located and had started cooperating.

Then Dominic placed his father’s ledger on the table.

Arthur’s face finally broke.

“Where did you find that?”

Dominic smiled.

“You recognize it.”

Arthur had exposed himself.

One by one, the council members pushed away Arthur’s transfer documents.

His power vanished in silence.

Then Dominic made another decision.

The old Vale organization would end.

No illegal accounts.

No intimidation.

No criminal protection operations.

Arthur laughed.

“You’ll destroy your father’s legacy.”

Dominic looked at Julian.

Then at the brace beneath his trousers.

“My father’s legacy nearly destroyed his sons.”

Sirens approached outside.

Arthur finally understood.

Dominic wasn’t replacing him.

Dominic was dismantling the entire system that created men like him.

Investigators entered.

Arthur was arrested.

Peter cooperated.

Raymond Pike faced prosecution.

Dominic refused private revenge.

For the first time in his life, he let the law handle men who had harmed him.

That evening, he found Clare packing.

She intended to leave.

Dominic didn’t stop her.

Instead, he offered her something unexpected.

A new position.

Household operations manager.

Three times her previous salary.

Health insurance.

Housing allowance.

And the authority to help turn the mansion into something other than a fortress.

Clare stared at the contract.

“Why me?”

Dominic looked toward Ellie.

“Because everyone powerful in this house missed what mattered.”

Then he looked back at Clare.

“You didn’t.”

She agreed to think about it.

Dominic believed the nightmare was ending.

Then Dr. Mercer entered the rehabilitation room the following morning holding new scans.

One look at his face erased Dominic’s relief.

Arthur might have lost.

But the damage he caused hadn’t disappeared.
