Chapter 7 - MIDNIGHT AT BLACKWOOD ESTATE

“WE HAVE THIRTY-SIX MINUTES.”

Alexander Blackwood stared at the clock on the wall.

11:24 P.M.

Thirty-six minutes until midnight.

Thirty-six minutes until whatever Eleanor Blackwood had planned for Ethan began.

Maybe ended.

His six-year-old son was somewhere inside the abandoned Blackwood Estate, held by the grandmother Alexander had believed dead for twenty-six years.

Catherine stood beside him.

Alive.

His wife.

The woman he had buried.

The woman he had mourned.

The woman he had spent three years hating himself for failing to save.

Maria stood across the hallway, one arm wrapped in a bloodstained bandage.

Vanessa was handcuffed to a chair under police supervision.

Detective Reed was arguing with tactical command through his radio.

And in Alexander’s hand was the document that had just turned everything upside down.

ETHAN JAMES BLACKWOOD.

GABRIEL DELGADO.

A coded ownership certificate disguised as a birth certificate.

Alexander looked at Catherine.

“You said Ethan and Maria own everything.”

Catherine nodded.

“Explain it in the car.”

“We’re not going anywhere until I understand what Eleanor wants from my son.”

Catherine stepped closer.

“She needs two bloodlines.”

“What?”

“The Blackwood Trust was never designed for one family.”

Maria stared at her.

Catherine continued.

“Your grandfather, Thomas Blackwood, built the company with Rafael Delgado.”

Maria’s lips parted.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“They were equal partners. Fifty-fifty.”

“Then why was my family erased?”

“Because Meridian needed a single public dynasty.”

Alexander understood.

“The Blackwoods.”

Catherine nodded.

“Rafael discovered what Meridian was becoming. He wanted out. Thomas didn’t.”

“So Thomas stole his shares?”

“Not exactly.”

Catherine pointed at the coded document.

“Rafael anticipated betrayal. The original ownership agreement required biological authorization from both family lines before anyone could permanently transfer controlling ownership.”

Reed frowned.

“You’re telling me there’s some kind of biometric security system built around a corporate trust?”

“The current version is digital. The original mechanism wasn’t.”

“What was it?”

“Blood.”

Silence.

Alexander stared at her.

Catherine continued.

“Two descendants. One Blackwood. One Delgado.”

Maria slowly understood.

“Me and Ethan.”

“Yes.”

Alexander shook his head.

“Ethan is a Blackwood.”

Catherine looked at him.

“He is.”

“Then why is Gabriel’s name on that document?”

“Because Gabriel was registered as Ethan’s Delgado trustee.”

Maria whispered:

“My brother?”

“He wasn’t Ethan’s father. He was his designated counterpart.”

Catherine’s eyes softened.

“After Gabriel disappeared, his legal position passed to his nearest surviving blood relative.”

Maria.

Alexander looked at her.

“So Eleanor needs Ethan…”

“And Maria,” Catherine finished.

Everyone turned toward Maria.

Her face drained of color.

Reed immediately spoke into his radio.

“Nobody leaves this floor.”

Maria looked at Catherine.

“If Eleanor needs me, why did she take Ethan first?”

“Leverage.”

Catherine didn’t hesitate.

“She knew you’d come.”

Alexander grabbed his coat.

“Then we go.”

Reed stepped in front of him.

“No.”

Alexander stared at him.

“My son is tied to a chair.”

“And walking into a hostage situation without tactical support gets him killed.”

“You think I’m staying here?”

“I think we do this intelligently.”

Catherine stepped between them.

“Eleanor will see tactical teams before they reach the property.”

Reed looked at her.

“How?”

“Blackwood Estate has surveillance covering almost two miles.”

Alexander frowned.

“That system was disconnected years ago.”

“No.”

Catherine looked at him.

“Richard told you it was disconnected.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

Another lie.

Another secret.

Another part of his childhood that had never belonged to him.

Reed lowered his voice.

“What’s the alternative?”

Catherine took out the brass key.

“We enter underneath.”

Twenty-three minutes later, a black SUV moved through the rain.

Alexander drove.

Catherine sat beside him.

Maria sat behind them.

Reed followed in an unmarked police vehicle far enough back to remain unseen.

Vanessa had been left in police custody.

At least, that was the plan.

Alexander kept his eyes on the road.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Finally:

“Why didn’t you come home?”

Catherine looked at him.

“We already talked about this.”

“No.”

Alexander’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“You explained Meridian. You explained Ethan. You explained my father. But you never answered the question.”

“I did.”

“No, you gave me reasons.”

He looked at her.

“I want the truth.”

Catherine stared through the windshield.

Rain streaked across the glass.

“The truth?”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of Meridian?”

“Of you.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

Catherine continued.

“I had uncovered evidence against your father. Your mother. Your grandfather. Your company.”

“You thought I was part of it.”

“I didn’t know.”

Alexander looked away.

“That’s why you never trusted me.”

“I loved you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Catherine’s eyes filled.

“No.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“No what?”

“I didn’t trust you enough.”

That hurt more than he expected.

Three years of grief.

Three years raising Ethan alone.

Three years talking to a grave that had never contained his wife.

And somewhere during all of it, Catherine had been alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

Doubting him.

Maria leaned forward.

“Alexander.”

“Not now.”

“You need to hear something.”

He looked at her in the mirror.

“Catherine wasn’t the only one who doubted you.”

Maria swallowed.

“Gabriel did too.”

Alexander said nothing.

“My brother believed Meridian had someone close to the top of Blackwood Industries.”

“I was the top.”

“Exactly.”

Alexander gave a bitter laugh.

“So everybody thought I was corrupt.”

“No.”

Maria looked at him.

“We were afraid you were compromised without knowing it.”

Alexander remembered Catherine’s failed attempts to reach him.

Changed meetings.

Missing documents.

Dead phone lines.

He had lived at the center of the machine without realizing the machine was controlling him.

Catherine whispered:

“That’s why I stayed away.”

Alexander didn’t forgive her.

But for the first time…

he understood.

The SUV turned off the main road.

Blackwood Estate appeared beyond the trees.

Alexander hadn’t visited in fifteen years.

The original family estate predated Blackwood Manor by almost a century.

Stone walls.

Gothic windows.

Iron gates.

It looked less like a home than a mausoleum built for people too wealthy to admit they were mortal.

Alexander stopped half a mile away.

Catherine pointed toward the woods.

“There.”

They abandoned the SUV.

11:51 P.M.

Nine minutes.

They moved through the rain.

Maria stumbled once.

Alexander caught her.

“You okay?”

“My arm hurts.”

“You can stay here.”

Maria looked at him like he had insulted her.

“She has Ethan.”

Alexander nodded.

“Then we finish this.”

Catherine found a stone structure buried beneath vines.

An old family crypt.

She inserted the brass key.

The iron door opened.

Cold air breathed from below.

Alexander switched on his flashlight.

Stone stairs descended underground.

“You knew this existed?” he asked.

Catherine nodded.

“Richard showed me.”

“Of course he did.”

They descended.

The tunnel smelled of wet earth.

After fifty yards, they reached an iron gate.

Catherine opened it.

Beyond it was a corridor.

Electric lights glowed along the walls.

Alexander stared.

“This place has power.”

“Eleanor restored it.”

“How long has she been here?”

Catherine looked at him.

“Longer than any of us realized.”

A bell rang somewhere above them.

Midnight.

Maria whispered:

“We’re too late.”

Then Ethan screamed.

“DADDY!”

Alexander ran.

“ETHAN!”

Catherine grabbed him.

“Wait!”

He tore free.

The corridor opened into a massive underground chamber.

Alexander stopped.

The room looked like a bank vault built beneath a church.

Steel walls.

Computer terminals.

Old filing cabinets.

A circular platform stood in the center.

Ethan was strapped to a chair on it.

“Daddy!”

Alexander stepped forward.

Eleanor Blackwood emerged from the shadows.

Silver hair.

Black dress.

Perfect posture.

The same face Alexander remembered from childhood.

Older.

Sharper.

Colder.

“My son.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Let him go.”

“You always did skip the pleasantries.”

“LET HIM GO.”

Ethan sobbed.

Eleanor looked almost offended.

“I haven’t hurt him.”

“You kidnapped him.”

“I brought my grandson home.”

“This is not his home.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Everything you can see belongs to him.”

Maria entered behind Alexander.

Eleanor’s smile widened.

“And there she is.”

Maria stopped.

“Maria Delgado.”

Eleanor looked almost pleased.

“You have your grandfather’s eyes.”

“You knew him?”

“I watched him die.”

Maria’s face changed.

Alexander stepped between them.

“What did you say?”

Eleanor shrugged.

“Rafael Delgado became inconvenient.”

Maria lunged.

Catherine grabbed her.

“No!”

“You killed my grandfather!”

“I didn’t pull the trigger.”

Eleanor smiled.

“I simply approved the expense.”

Maria shook with rage.

Alexander looked at Ethan.

“Untie him.”

“Soon.”

Eleanor approached the circular platform.

Two glass panels rose from a console.

One labeled BLACKWOOD.

The other DELGADO.

Catherine whispered:

“The authorization system.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Very good.”

She looked at Alexander.

“Your grandfather believed blood was more trustworthy than signatures.”

Alexander stared.

“What do you need?”

“Ethan’s hand.”

“And Maria’s.”

Eleanor looked at Maria.

“Together, they open the original trust.”

“And then?”

“I correct a mistake that has lasted thirty-seven years.”

Maria laughed bitterly.

“You mean steal everything.”

“No.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“I built Meridian. I made Blackwood Industries untouchable. I bought the judges who protected it. The regulators who ignored it. The politicians who expanded it.”

Alexander felt disgusted.

“You’re proud of that?”

“I’m realistic.”

“You tried to kill me.”

For the first time, Eleanor’s expression shifted.

“Richard told you that?”

“Catherine did.”

Eleanor looked at Catherine.

“You always were dramatic.”

Catherine stepped forward.

“Tell him.”

Eleanor looked at Alexander.

“I never ordered your death.”

Catherine froze.

Alexander stared.

“What?”

“I ordered you removed from the succession.”

“That’s not what the records say.”

“What records?”

“The ones Catherine found.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Catherine found what Richard wanted her to find.”

Catherine’s face changed.

“No.”

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Eleanor almost sounded sympathetic.

“You still think Richard was protecting you?”

Alexander stepped closer.

“My father was shot because of you.”

“Was he?”

Eleanor tilted her head.

“Did you see me shoot him?”

“No.”

“Did Catherine?”

Silence.

Eleanor looked at the clock.

12:03.

“We’re wasting time.”

She motioned.

Two armed men emerged.

Alexander moved in front of Catherine.

Eleanor sighed.

“Don’t make this ugly.”

“You kidnapped my son. It’s already ugly.”

Eleanor looked at Ethan.

“Place his hand on the scanner.”

One guard approached.

Alexander attacked.

He drove his elbow into the man’s throat.

Catherine shoved Maria behind the console.

A gunshot exploded.

Alexander slammed the guard against the steel wall.

The second man aimed.

Then another shot rang out.

The guard fell.

Detective Reed stood at the entrance.

“POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Eleanor didn’t move.

Reed aimed at her.

“Step away from the child.”

Eleanor smiled.

“You brought a police officer into my house?”

Then Reed’s radio crackled.

A voice came through.

“Detective Reed, stand down.”

Reed froze.

His captain.

Eleanor smiled wider.

“Samuel.”

Reed’s face went pale.

“You know me?”

“I paid for your academy tuition.”

Reed stared.

“What?”

“Your father couldn’t afford it.”

Reed’s gun lowered half an inch.

Eleanor continued.

“Meridian has been taking care of your family for twenty years.”

“You’re lying.”

“Ask your mother.”

Reed’s hand shook.

Alexander shouted:

“Don’t listen to her.”

Eleanor pressed a button.

A screen illuminated.

Bank transfers appeared.

Payments to Reed’s father.

His mother.

His sister.

Reed stared.

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

Eleanor smiled.

“That’s why you were useful.”

Suddenly, Ethan screamed.

Maria had reached him.

She tore at the restraints.

Eleanor spun.

“STOP HER!”

Alexander tackled the nearest guard.

Catherine ran toward Ethan.

Maria freed one wrist.

Then the floor beneath the platform shifted.

Metal restraints snapped around Maria’s wrist.

She screamed.

A needle punctured her thumb.

Blood flowed onto the Delgado scanner.

“NO!”

Eleanor pressed another control.

Ethan’s free hand was forced against the Blackwood panel.

“DADDY!”

A green light appeared.

BLACKWOOD DNA CONFIRMED.

Another light.

DELGADO DNA CONFIRMED.

The chamber vibrated.

A massive steel door began opening.

Eleanor stared.

For the first time that night, her composure disappeared.

She looked almost hungry.

Behind the door was not gold.

Not cash.

Not jewels.

Rows of servers.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Decades of evidence.

Catherine whispered:

“Meridian’s archive.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Every payment. Every judge. Every murder. Every politician. Every corporation.”

Reed stared.

“This could destroy thousands of people.”

Eleanor corrected him.

“It could control them.”

Alexander understood.

She didn’t want Blackwood Industries.

She wanted leverage over everyone Meridian had ever bought.

Then a voice came from inside the vault.

“You always did confuse control with power, Eleanor.”

Eleanor froze.

Maria stopped breathing.

A man stepped from behind the servers.

Mid-forties.

Thin.

Scar across his jaw.

Maria whispered:

“No…”

The man looked at her.

Tears filled his eyes.

“Hello, little sister.”

Maria collapsed against the console.

“Gabriel?”

Gabriel Delgado smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry it took me so long.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“You’re dead.”

Gabriel raised a small device.

“No.”

He looked toward the servers.

May you like

“But Meridian is.”

And pressed the button.
