Chapter 8 - THE DEAD MAN HAD BEEN WAITING FOR MIDNIGHT Every monitor in the underground chamber turned red.

UPLOAD INITIATED.
Eleanor screamed.
“WHAT DID YOU DO?”
Gabriel Delgado stood inside the vault, staring at the woman who had spent decades believing she controlled every secret in America.
“I gave your empire an expiration date.”
Eleanor lunged toward the console.
Catherine blocked her.
Eleanor slapped Catherine hard enough to send her against the steel railing.
Alexander moved.
“Touch her again—”
A gunshot cracked.
Everyone froze.
Eleanor held a pistol.
She had pulled it from beneath her dress.
The barrel pointed directly at Gabriel.
“Stop the upload.”
Gabriel smiled.
“No.”
Maria stared at her brother.
Five years.
Five years believing he might be dead.
Five years wondering whether his body was buried somewhere without a name.
“You’re alive.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
Maria’s voice broke.
“You let me think you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“No!”
Tears streamed down her face.
“You don’t get to say that!”
Gabriel flinched.
Alexander understood the anger.
It was the same wound Catherine had given him.
People disappearing in the name of protection.
Leaving the living to carry the grief.
Eleanor fired.
Gabriel ducked.
The bullet struck a server.
Sparks erupted.
Reed returned fire.
Eleanor disappeared behind the console.
Alexander reached Ethan.
“Daddy!”
“I’ve got you.”
He tore away the remaining restraints and lifted the boy.
Ethan wrapped himself around his father.
“I knew you’d come.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
“I will always come.”
Catherine approached.
Ethan saw her.
His entire body became still.
“Mommy?”
Catherine stopped.
Three years of hiding.
Three years of imagined reunions.
None of them had prepared her for the way her son looked at her.
Not happiness.
Confusion.
Fear.
“Hi, baby.”
Ethan buried his face against Alexander.
Catherine’s heart broke.
Alexander saw it.
He didn’t force Ethan toward her.
Not now.
Not here.
“Later,” he whispered.
Catherine nodded through tears.
Gunfire erupted from the tunnel.
Reed turned.
More Meridian security.
“We need to move!”
Gabriel shouted from inside the vault.
“Not yet!”
“The place is surrounded!”
“If I disconnect before the upload reaches twenty percent, Eleanor can wipe the remote copies.”
Alexander looked at the monitor.
12%.
“How long?”
“Three minutes.”
“We don’t have three minutes.”
Gabriel stared at him.
“You want to end Meridian?”
Alexander looked at Ethan.
“I want my son alive.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Then take him.”
Maria stepped toward her brother.
“I’m staying.”
“No.”
“You disappeared for five years.”
“Maria—”
“You don’t get to order me around now.”
Gabriel almost smiled.
“You haven’t changed.”
“Neither have you.”
“Unfortunately.”
Reed fired toward the corridor.
“Family reunion later!”
Catherine took Ethan from Alexander.
This time the boy allowed it.
Barely.
Alexander joined Reed.
The first attacker appeared.
Alexander struck his wrist against the doorframe.
The gun fell.
Reed tackled him.
A second man fired.
Catherine ducked with Ethan.
Maria screamed.
Gabriel reached 18%.
Eleanor appeared behind him.
Gun raised.
Maria saw her.
“GABRIEL!”
He turned.
Eleanor fired.
Gabriel staggered.
Maria screamed.
The bullet struck his side.
He collapsed against the server rack.
Eleanor moved toward the console.
Maria threw herself at her.
They crashed to the floor.
Eleanor was stronger than she looked.
She grabbed Maria by the hair.
“You should have stayed a nanny.”
Maria punched her.
“And you should’ve stayed dead.”
Eleanor’s head snapped sideways.
Maria grabbed the pistol.
They struggled.
Alexander ran toward them.
Eleanor kicked Maria away.
Then pointed the gun at Ethan.
Everything stopped.
Alexander raised his hands.
“No.”
Eleanor breathed heavily.
Blood ran from her lip.
“You took everything from me.”
Alexander stared.
“You did that yourself.”
“Stop the upload.”
Gabriel lay bleeding.
Monitor:
23%.
He smiled.
“Too late.”
Eleanor’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Gabriel coughed.
“Twenty percent creates autonomous mirrors.”
Eleanor looked at the screen.
23%.
“Where?”
“Everywhere.”
“You’re bluffing.”
“Try me.”
Eleanor pointed the gun at him.
Gabriel laughed weakly.
“You can kill me.”
He looked at Maria.
“But you can’t kill the truth anymore.”
Sirens echoed above the estate.
Not local police.
Federal vehicles.
Gabriel looked at Reed.
“I sent the first package to the FBI six hours ago.”
Reed stared.
“You knew this would happen.”
“I hoped.”
Eleanor’s face collapsed.
For the first time, Alexander saw what she looked like without control.
Old.
Tired.
Afraid.
Then she smiled.
“That archive doesn’t only destroy me.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
“It destroys Blackwood.”
Alexander looked at him.
“What does she mean?”
Eleanor laughed.
“Tell him.”
Gabriel said nothing.
“Tell your precious Blackwood prince what his father signed.”
Alexander stared.
“What did I sign?”
Eleanor looked delighted.
“Acquisitions. Transfers. shell-company approvals.”
Alexander remembered thousands of documents crossing his desk over the years.
Corporate restructurings.
International investments.
Board authorizations.
Routine paperwork.
His stomach turned.
“You used my signature.”
“We used your arrogance.”
Catherine looked at him.
“Alex…”
Eleanor continued.
“You never asked where the money came from as long as the quarterly numbers went up.”
Alexander wanted to deny it.
But he couldn’t.
He had trusted the system.
He had benefited from it.
Maybe ignorance wasn’t innocence.
Gabriel spoke.
“The archive contains evidence Alexander signed transactions connected to Meridian.”
Reed looked at him.
“Did he know?”
“I found no evidence he did.”
“That may not matter to prosecutors.”
Alexander nodded slowly.
“Release it anyway.”
Catherine turned.
“Alex.”
He looked at Gabriel.
“All of it.”
Eleanor stared at her son.
“You’d destroy your own company?”
“If that’s what it takes.”
“You’ll lose billions.”
Alexander looked at Ethan.
“Then I lose billions.”
“Your name.”
“Let it burn.”
“Your family legacy.”
Alexander’s voice became quiet.
“My son is my family legacy.”
Eleanor stared.
Something changed in Gabriel’s expression.
Respect.
The upload reached 31%.
Eleanor lowered the gun.
For a moment, it seemed over.
Then she turned the weapon toward herself.
Alexander moved.
“Mom.”
Eleanor froze.
He stepped closer.
“Put it down.”
“You hate me.”
“I don’t know you.”
“That’s worse.”
“Maybe.”
He kept approaching.
“But Ethan is watching.”
Eleanor looked at her grandson.
The little boy stared from Catherine’s arms.
No child should have seen this much violence.
No child should have been forced to carry the sins of adults.
Eleanor’s hand trembled.
Alexander spoke softly.
“Don’t make him remember you this way.”
For the first time, tears appeared in Eleanor Blackwood’s eyes.
She lowered the gun.
Reed rushed forward and took it.
Federal agents poured into the chamber.
“FBI! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!”
Eleanor was placed in handcuffs.
Maria ran to Gabriel.
“Stay with me.”
“I’m trying.”
“You idiot.”
He smiled weakly.
“I missed you too.”
Paramedics were called.
Alexander turned toward Catherine.
Ethan was staring at her.
“Are you really Mommy?”
Catherine knelt.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you come home?”
Catherine looked at Alexander.
Then back at Ethan.
Because there was no lie gentle enough.
“I was scared.”
“Of Grandma?”
“Yes.”
“Did you forget me?”
Catherine broke.
“No.”
She covered her mouth.
“Never. Not for one second.”
Ethan hesitated.
Then stepped toward her.
Catherine wrapped her arms around him.
Alexander turned away.
Not because he didn’t want to see.
Because he couldn’t let anyone see him cry.
At 12:17 A.M., the upload reached 100%.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“Done.”
Maria squeezed his hand.
“What happens now?”
“Now?”
He looked at Eleanor being led away.
“Everybody who ever paid Meridian is going to wake up terrified.”
Reed’s phone rang.
Then another agent’s.
Then another.
Across the room, screens filled with incoming alerts.
Financial institutions.
Federal agencies.
News organizations.
Anonymous evidence packages.
Catherine stared.
“You sent it to reporters?”
Gabriel nodded.
“Evidence disappears when only one government office has it.”
Alexander looked at him.
“You planned for corruption.”
“I learned from experts.”
Eleanor heard him.
She laughed.
“You think exposing Meridian ends it?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“It ends you.”
“No.”
Eleanor stopped walking.
“Meridian existed before I controlled it.”
Silence.
Gabriel’s expression changed.
“What?”
Eleanor smiled.
“You found my archive.”
She looked around the vault.
“You think this is the only one?”
Gabriel went pale.
“There are others?”
“Of course.”
“How many?”
Eleanor said nothing.
Federal agents pulled her toward the exit.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Mom.”
She looked back.
“Who controls them?”
Eleanor smiled.
“You still think I was the top.”
Alexander froze.
Catherine stared.
“What are you saying?”
Eleanor’s smile widened.
“I was the American branch.”
Gabriel tried to sit up.
“American branch of what?”
But Eleanor was taken away.
Hours later, sunrise spread across Boston.
Ethan slept in Alexander’s arms inside an FBI command vehicle.
Catherine sat opposite him.
Neither spoke.
Finally Alexander said:
“What happens to us?”
Catherine looked at Ethan.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s the first answer tonight I believe completely.”
She almost smiled.
Almost.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
Catherine nodded.
“I deserve that.”
“But Ethan needs his mother.”
Her eyes lifted.
“That doesn’t mean we go back to pretending nothing happened.”
“I know.”
“We start with him.”
“Yes.”
“And truth.”
Catherine nodded.
“No more secrets.”
Alexander looked out the window.
“Everybody says that right before another secret appears.”
His phone rang.
Hospital.
He answered.
“Mr. Blackwood?”
“Yes.”
“Your father is awake.”
Alexander looked at Catherine.
“He’s asking for you.”
An hour later, Alexander entered Richard’s hospital room.
His father looked twenty years older.
Machines surrounded him.
Richard opened his eyes.
“Ethan?”
“Safe.”
Richard exhaled.
“Catherine?”
“Alive.”
A tear slid from Richard’s eye.
“Then I did one thing right.”
Alexander sat.
“Did you?”
Richard looked at him.
“I know you’re angry.”
“You let me bury my wife.”
“I saved her.”
“You stole three years from my son.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“Eleanor is alive.”
Richard’s eyes opened.
Alexander watched him carefully.
“She’s been arrested.”
Richard whispered:
“Thank God.”
“Gabriel exposed Meridian.”
Richard looked confused.
“Gabriel?”
“He’s alive.”
Richard’s heart monitor accelerated.
“No.”
Alexander leaned forward.
“What?”
Richard stared at him.
“Gabriel Delgado died five years ago.”
Alexander felt cold.
“I saw him.”
“No.”
“He was at the estate.”
Richard shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
“What don’t I understand?”
Richard tried to sit up.
Pain twisted his face.
“The man you saw…”
He grabbed Alexander’s wrist.
“…is not Gabriel Delgado.”
Alexander stared.
Richard’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Gabriel had a twin brother.”
Alexander stopped breathing.
“What was his name?”
Richard looked terrified.
“Michael.”
And three floors below them, the man everyone believed was Gabriel Delgado opened his eyes in a hospital recovery room.
A nurse smiled.
“Mr. Delgado?”
He looked at her.
“Yes?”
“You have a visitor.”
The nurse stepped aside.
Vanessa Sterling entered.
The man smiled.
“You took your time.”
Vanessa closed the door.
“You told them you were Gabriel?”
“For now.”
“And Maria?”
“She believed me.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“What about Alexander?”
“He released the archive exactly like we wanted.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You said Ethan wouldn’t get hurt.”
Michael Delgado smiled.
“I say many things.”
Vanessa looked suddenly afraid.
“What happens now?”
Michael turned toward the window.
Morning light spread across Boston.
“Now Blackwood falls.”
“And Meridian?”
May you like
Michael smiled.
“Meridian begins again.”
