Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Aftermath

By 3:00 AM, the estate was empty.
The police vehicles, federal transport vans, and forensic units had cleared the main drive, leaving behind only the cold rain and the deep tire tracks in the mud.
Dominic sat in his study, staring into the fading embers of the fireplace. The house was quiet, but the silence felt heavy, stained by the darkness that had nearly stolen his son’s life.
A quiet knock echoed at the door.
"Come in," Dominic said.
The door opened, and Sophia walked in, carrying a tray with a warm cup of espresso. She looked exhausted, dark circles beneath her eyes, but her posture was still dignified.
She set the tray on the corner of his desk. "I thought you might need this, Mr. Moretti."
Dominic looked up at her. "How is Lily?"
"She’s fast asleep," Sophia said, a soft, motherly smile touching her lips for the first time all night. "She was holding Ethan’s red bear so tightly I couldn't pull it from her arms."
Dominic nodded slowly. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a thick leather folder, pushing it across the desk toward her.
Sophia frowned politely. "What is this, sir?"
"It is a deed of trust," Dominic explained. "In six months, my legal team will complete the acquisition of a private estate in Long Island. The house, the land, and an educational fund of five million dollars have been placed permanently into Lily’s name."
Sophia gasped, stepping back as if burned. "Mr. Moretti... no! I can't accept that! I am your employee! Lily did what any child—"
"Lily saved my son's life, Sophia," Dominic cut her off, his tone firm, unyielding, yet filled with intense gratitude. "If she had not slapped that plate out of Ethan’s hands, I would be preparing a funeral for my eight-year-old boy tomorrow morning."
He stood up, walking around the desk to stand before her.
"Money cannot repay what she did," Dominic said softly. "Nothing ever can. But as long as I draw breath, you and your daughter will never want for anything in this life. You will never worry about rent, medical bills, tuition, or safety. You are family now, Sophia. Whether you like it or not."
May you like
Tears welled up in Sophia’s eyes, spilling down her cheeks. She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking as the built-up terror and relief of the night finally washed over her.
Dominic reached out and gently patted her shoulder, offering the quiet, unwavering protection he had spent his life building.
