Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The extradition of Julian Vance sent shockwaves through the global financial and political sectors. Within forty-eight hours, the full extent of the conspiracy was exposed by federal prosecutors.

Julian Vance and Senator Hastings were jointly indicted under federal RICO laws for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and high-level extortion. Julian’s assets were seized by the federal government, his law license revoked, and his name erased from the board of Moretti Enterprises.

Marco Moretti, cleared of all suspicion, wept openly in Dominic’s study when his brother personally apologized for ever doubting his loyalty.

"You were protecting Ethan," Marco said, hugging his older brother tightly. "I would have suspected the whole world too."

With the threats permanently dismantled and the empire secured under tighter, more loyal leadership, peace finally returned to the Moretti estate.

Two months later, an official celebration was held in the grand ballroom.

This time, there were no political guests, no hedge fund titans, no media cameras, and no grand speeches. The heavy mahogany doors were open to the spring breeze, and the air was filled with the warm scent of fresh flowers and baking vanilla.

The ballroom was decorated with hundreds of bright yellow balloons—Lily’s favorite color.

In the center of the room stood a massive, three-tiered birthday cake covered in soft blue frosting and sugar stars.

Standing around the cake were Dominic, Ethan, Sophia, Lily, Dr. Harris, Vincent, and Marco.

Ethan, wearing a bright red party hat, held the cake knife alongside his father.

"Wait!" Lily’s small voice echoed through the room.

Everyone stopped. Vincent instinctively placed a hand over his mouth to hide his laugh, while Marco grinned warmly.

Lily, wearing a yellow princess dress and her signature white sneakers, trotted up to the table. She climbed onto a small wooden stool, leaned close to the cake, and inspected the blue frosting with absolute, terrifying intensity.

She touched a corner of the bottom tier with her tiny finger, brought it to her tongue, and tasted it carefully.

The entire room held its breath.

Lily swallowed, wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, and looked up at Ethan.

"It's good," she declared solemnly. "No bad man."

The ballroom erupted into joyous, warm laughter that seemed to chase away seven years of grief and shadows from the high ceilings.

Ethan laughed, cutting the first piece of cake and placing it carefully onto a paper plate.

He didn't eat it himself.

Instead, Ethan walked over, handed the plate and a plastic fork to Lily, and said, "The first piece is yours, Lily. Forever."

Lily took the plate with both hands, her big grey eyes shining with pure delight as she took a huge bite of vanilla cake, getting white frosting all over her nose.
