Chapter 2 - SOPHIE At the hospital, the little girl's name became the first confirmed fact.

“Sophie.”
Only Sophie.
She was six years old.
Underweight. Mildly dehydrated. Iron deficient. Vitamin D deficient. Several healing scratches covered her arms and knees.
But there were no broken bones.
No obvious signs of long-term physical assault.
The doctors couldn't explain how she had survived in the hidden passage without someone bringing her food and water.
Police discovered another entrance behind shelving in our utility room.
The passage extended beneath the side porch toward the neighboring property.
A forgotten maintenance easement.
A hidden route between two houses.
Someone had been using it.
The social worker gently questioned Sophie.
“Who is Mara?”
“My aunt.”
“Where is your mother?”
Sophie lowered her eyes.
“Gone.”
“And your father?”
She looked directly at me.
“Daddy.”
My stomach twisted.
The social worker stopped the questioning.
Later, Sophie whispered that her mother's name was Caroline.
Then she said something that made my blood freeze.
“Mom showed me your picture.”
“My picture?”
She nodded.
“She said your name.”
“What name?”
“Ryan.”
Emily looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Outside the hospital, she finally asked the question.
“Do you know a Caroline?”
I searched my memory.
Then something surfaced.
A name from old fertility records.
Caroline Mercer.
I remembered seeing it years earlier.
At Harbor Ridge Fertility Center.
Emily stared at me.
“Ryan…”
“I don't know what it means.”
“But you remember her?”
“Only the name.”
That night, neither of us slept.

Because somewhere between our daughter's sandwiches and a hidden passage in our own home, our family had become a mystery.
And we had just discovered that the mystery might begin with a fertility clinic.
