Chapter 9 - EMILY'S QUESTION One night, Emily asked me something I couldn't answer.

“If she's genetically ours… is she ours?”
She wasn't asking about DNA.
She was asking about motherhood.
Caroline had carried Sophie.
Loved her.
Raised her.
Woken up with her during fevers.
Held her when she was frightened.
Sophie called Caroline Mom.
Emily didn't want to erase that.
Neither did I.
Our attorney, Grace Holden, explained that biology didn't automatically settle legal parentage.
Assisted reproduction law was complicated.
Intent mattered.
Consent mattered.
Birth records mattered.
Sophie had a legal history.
And Mara had once been her lawful guardian.
So we waited.
Sophie was placed temporarily with an experienced foster family.
Then, after an emergency home assessment, she was placed with us under court supervision.
The first night, she refused to sleep in the bedroom.
She slept under the bed instead.
Emily sat on the floor outside until she finally fell asleep.
I watched them from the doorway.
This little girl was genetically mine.
But trust couldn't be inherited.
May you like
It had to be earned.
One night at a time.
