Chapter 17 - THE THINGS WE LEAVE BEHIND They slowly rebuilt their lives.

David returned to work.

Leah began making plans for the future.

Maya learned to crawl.

Then stand.

Then walk.

The past became something they discussed less often.

Not because they had forgotten.

Because it no longer controlled them.

One Saturday, David opened the final box from their old house.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Childhood toys.

And one photograph of himself as a little boy sitting beside his mother.

He stared at it for a long time.

Leah stood beside him.

"You don't have to keep it."

"I know."

David touched the photograph.

"I just needed to remember something."

"What?"

"The boy in this picture wasn't responsible for what happened later."

Leah took his hand.

"Neither are you."

David closed the box.

That was the moment he understood something.

Breaking away from abuse wasn't simply leaving someone behind.

Sometimes it meant learning to forgive yourself for not knowing what you know now.

He carried the box into the garage.

Then closed the door.

Not because he was running from his past.

Because his past no longer needed a place inside his home.
