Chapter 7 - THIRTY-EIGHT WEEKS The storm came at night.

Rain hammered against the windows.

Thunder rolled over the neighborhood.

At exactly thirty-eight weeks and two days, David woke to Leah gripping his arm.

"David."

Her voice was barely audible.

He turned.

Then saw the blood.

Everything inside him stopped.

"My God."

Leah cried out as another contraction seized her body.

"My water broke."

David jumped out of bed.

He grabbed the hospital bag.

His hands were shaking so badly he nearly dropped it.

"Stay with me."

"I'm scared."

"So am I."

He helped her downstairs.

Outside, rain covered the windshield.

David started the car.

Leah leaned back, breathing rapidly.

"She's coming too soon."

"We're going to make it."

He pulled onto the road.

Then he saw headlights behind them.

A dark sedan.

Too close.

His heart stopped.

He changed lanes.

The sedan followed.

Leah looked into the side mirror.

"David?"

He gripped the steering wheel.

"It's her."

Leah's face went pale.

"No."

David accelerated.

The storm swallowed the road.

And somewhere behind them, his mother followed.

She had waited.

She had watched.

She had chosen the exact moment when David's family would be most vulnerable.

The fortress had kept her outside.

May you like

So she had found another battlefield.

The road.
