Chapter 18 - WHAT FAMILY REALLY MEANS Maya's first birthday arrived in spring.

There were balloons everywhere.

A tiny cake.

Photographs covering the refrigerator.

Leah lifted Maya into the air.

Maya squealed with laughter.

David watched them.

Once, his mother had taught him that family meant blood.

Obligation.

Loyalty without limits.

Silence.

She had been wrong.

Family wasn't the person who demanded access to you.

Family was the person who respected your boundaries.

Family was the person who stayed when life became difficult.

Family was the person who protected your right to become yourself.

David looked at Leah.

Then Maya.

This was his family.

Not because they shared his blood.

Because they shared his life.

That evening, after everyone left, David stood alone in the backyard.

Maya's laughter echoed from inside.

Leah came outside.

"Thinking?"

"Yeah."

"About what?"

David smiled.

"How close we came to losing everything."

Leah slipped her hand into his.

"But we didn't."

David looked through the window.

Maya was playing with a balloon.

"No."

May you like

He smiled.

"We didn't."
