Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN IN BLUE Her face was bruised from the crash.

Hospital scrubs hid her clothes.
Her gray hair was tucked beneath a surgical cap.
She looked almost harmless.
Almost.
"David."
He couldn't breathe.
"How did you get in here?"
She smiled.
"I came for my family."
"You're not family anymore."
The smile vanished.
"You don't mean that."
David stepped between her and the operating room.
"You need to leave."
"The girl is taking you away from me."
"Her name is Maya."
His mother's eyes hardened.
"Don't name her."
David felt something inside him break.
"You're sick."
"I'm your mother."
"You stopped being my mother when you decided hurting Leah was acceptable."
Her face twisted.
"She stole you."
"No."
David's voice became strangely calm.
"I chose them."
She reached beneath her clothing.
Detective Miller shouted:
"Don't move!"
A flash of steel appeared.
The hallway erupted.
David stepped backward.
His mother lunged.
Not toward the officers.
Toward the operating room.
Toward the child she believed had destroyed her life.
David caught her wrist.
They crashed into the laundry cart.
The weapon fell.
Officers tackled her to the floor.
She screamed.
"David!"
He didn't answer.
May you like
For the first time in his life, she was no longer the person controlling the room.
She was simply a woman who had crossed a line she could never uncross.
