Chapter 19 - THE DOOR That evening, after Maya fell asleep, David stood at the front door.

He checked the lock.

Once.

Then he stopped himself.

He almost checked it again.

Instead, he smiled.

He walked away.

Leah came downstairs.

"Everything okay?"

"Yeah."

"You checked the door?"

"Once."

She laughed.

"Progress."

David smiled.

Outside, the wind moved softly through the trees.

The house was quiet.

Warm.

Alive.

For the first time, David wasn't listening for footsteps.

He wasn't watching shadows.

He wasn't waiting for another threat.

He was listening to his daughter's breathing upstairs.

And that was enough.

Leah took his hand.

"You know what I think?"

"What?"

"I think we're finally home."

David looked around.

The walls were ordinary.

The furniture was ordinary.

The house wasn't a fortress.

It didn't need to be.

Because safety wasn't created by locks.

It was created by trust.

By love.

By knowing that the people inside those walls would protect one another without trying to own one another.

David kissed Leah.

May you like

Then they walked upstairs.

Together.
