Chapter 8 - THE CHASE Rain became a wall.

David could barely see.
"Call 911."
Leah grabbed her phone.
"My hands are shaking."
"Just call."
The sedan accelerated.
Seventy miles per hour.
Then eighty.
The highway disappeared beneath sheets of rain.
Leah screamed as another contraction hit.
"My God!"
David looked at her.
"I'm here."
The dispatcher answered.
"911. What's your emergency?"
"My wife is in labor. We're being followed by someone under a restraining order."
The dispatcher instructed him to continue toward the nearest emergency access point.
Then lightning flashed.
The sedan pulled alongside them.
For one terrible second, David saw his mother's face.
Her eyes met his.
There was no apology.
No regret.
Only obsession.
Leah cried:
"Don't stop."
"I won't."
His mother suddenly turned the wheel.
David reacted instinctively.
He braked.
Her sedan lost traction.
It spun across the wet highway and crashed into a muddy ditch.
Leah stared behind them.
David's hands trembled.
"We have to keep going."
"Shouldn't we stop?"
He looked at his bleeding wife.
"Our daughter comes first."
For the first time in his life, David made a choice without worrying about his mother's feelings.
He chose Leah.
He chose Maya.
He chose his family.
Behind them, police lights appeared through the rain.
But when officers reached the wreckage, the driver's door was open.
May you like
The car was empty.
His mother had disappeared.
