CHAPTER 6 — THE DOOR THAT OPENED BY ITSELF

“DON’T MOVE. SOMEONE’S DOWNSTAIRS.”
The father pulled his son behind him as another slow creak rose through the mansion. The sound came from the hallway below—not loud, not hurried, but deliberate. Someone wanted them to hear it. His phone vibrated again. The investigator was still calling, yet the father suddenly understood that answering might reveal exactly where they were.
He switched the phone to silent and stared at the old device in his son’s trembling hands. The message remained on the screen.
HE’S ALREADY INSIDE THE HOUSE.
“Who sent that?”
“I don’t know,” the boy whispered. “It just appeared.”
The father’s stomach tightened.
That phone had belonged to his late wife.
Its number had been disconnected for years.
He locked the bedroom door, guided his son toward the bathroom, then quietly called the dark-haired woman who slept in the guest wing. She answered after one ring.
“Take the back stairs,” he whispered. “Get to my room. Don’t use the hallway.”
“What happened?”
“Someone is inside.”
Silence.
Then her voice hardened.
“I’m coming.”
A shadow passed beneath the bedroom door.
The father froze.
His son covered his mouth with both hands.
Someone stopped outside.
The handle turned once.
Then twice.
The lock held.
A man’s voice came softly through the door.
“You should have left the basement alone.”
The father’s blood turned cold.
“Who are you?”
No answer.
Instead, footsteps moved away.
Seconds later, the dark-haired woman entered through the hidden dressing-room passage connecting the guest wing to the master suite. She carried the boy into the bathroom while the father opened the investigator’s call.
“There’s someone in my house.”
“We’re already coming,” the investigator replied. “Listen carefully. The photograph from the basement wasn’t random.”
“What does that mean?”
“We enhanced it.”
The father looked toward his son.
“What did you find?”
“There was another person reflected in the hospital window.”
The father stopped breathing.
The investigator continued.
“We believe whoever entered your basement is the same person.”
Suddenly, every light in the mansion went out.
The boy screamed.
The emergency system should have activated immediately.
It didn’t.
Someone had disabled it.
Then a speaker hidden somewhere inside the bedroom crackled alive.
A distorted voice filled the darkness.
“You arrested my employee.”
The father tightened his grip around the flashlight.
“The technician worked for you?”
“He worked for everyone who paid enough.”
“Why my family?”
A pause followed.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Because your wife discovered us before she died.”
The father stared into the darkness.
His late wife had supposedly died in a highway accident.
No connection had ever been found between her death and the mansion.
Until now.
The speaker crackled again.
“She left something behind.”
“What?”
“You already have it.”
The father looked toward the old phone.
Then the voice whispered:
“And now I’m taking it back.”
A crash exploded downstairs.
Police sirens approached beyond the gates.
The intruder was running out of time.
But when officers finally entered and searched every room, they found no stranger.
Only an open basement door.
And on the desk sat the father’s wedding photograph.
His late wife’s face had been cut away.
On the back, someone had written:
ASK HER WHAT SHE SAW THE NIGHT YOUR WIFE DIED.
May you like
The father slowly turned toward the dark-haired woman.
Her face had gone completely pale.
