CHAPTER 8 — THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

“HE NEVER LEFT.”

The father grabbed his son and pulled him away from the window.

Police rushed outside while officers sealed every entrance. The photograph suggested the technician had returned, yet security cameras showed no vehicle approaching the estate.

Then the dark-haired woman noticed something strange.

“The picture wasn’t taken outside.”

She enlarged the image.

The mansion behind the technician looked reversed.

A reflection.

“He’s underground.”

The father remembered architectural plans from the original owner. The mansion had been renovated repeatedly, but one section beneath the east wing had never appeared on modern blueprints.

They entered the basement.

Behind the seized surveillance equipment stood a concrete wall.

The boy approached it.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“There’s air coming through.”

A thin draft moved through a crack near the floor.

Officers broke through the false wall.

Behind it was a narrow corridor.

The passage led beneath the mansion to a room nobody knew existed.

Inside were monitors, photographs, old newspapers, financial records, and surveillance images covering nearly a decade.

At the center stood an empty chair.

The technician was gone.

But someone had been there moments earlier.

Coffee was still warm.

The father moved toward a wall covered with photographs.

There was his wife.

His son.

The red-haired fiancée.

The technician.

The dark-haired woman.

Even the investigator.

“You’re on the wall,” the father whispered.

The investigator stared at his own photograph.

“I’ve never been in this room.”

Beneath every photograph was a date.

Some stretched back fifteen years.

Then the boy pointed toward one image.

“Dad… who’s that?”

The photograph showed his mother leaving the hospital after his birth.

Beside her stood another man.

The father recognized him immediately.

His older brother, Daniel.

Daniel had disappeared overseas shortly after the wife’s death.

The father had believed he wanted distance from the family tragedy.

Written beneath Daniel’s photograph were two words:

PRIMARY ACCESS.

The father called him.

The number rang.

Then someone answered.

No voice came through.

Only breathing.

“Daniel?”

The line remained silent.

“Were you involved?”

Finally, his brother whispered:

“Get your son out of that house.”

The father’s face tightened.

“Tell me what you did.”

“I tried to stop them.”

“Who?”

Daniel breathed heavily.

Then a gunshot exploded through the phone.

The connection died.

The boy screamed.

Police immediately began tracing the call.

The father stared at Daniel’s photograph.

Minutes later, investigators located the signal.

It had not come from overseas.

It had come from a property less than two miles away.

The father knew the address.

It belonged to his late wife.

A small lakeside cottage he had never sold.

When officers reached it, they found the front door open.

Blood marked the floor.

Daniel was nowhere inside.

But someone had left a laptop playing a live video.

The screen showed the little boy standing in the hidden underground room.

The father looked up sharply.

Someone was watching them right now.
