Chapter 3 - The Price of Arrogance

Trevor felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He looked at Chloe, who was staring at Roman with a mixture of absolute terror and undeniable awe.

“Mercer?” Trevor whispered, his voice barely audible over the soft jazz playing through the store’s speakers. He looked at Sadi, his mind rejecting the reality in front of him. “You married Roman Mercer?”

Sadi did not answer. She simply looked down at him, her expression a mask of clinical detachment. He looked so small on the floor. He looked exactly like the pathetic, hollow man she had always known he was deep down.

The boutique manager hurried back, placing a velvet box containing the rhodium cufflinks into a pristine black shopping bag. He handed it to Roman with a deep, deferential bow.

“Your purchase, Mr. Mercer,” the manager said softly. “Is there anything else we can provide for you today?”

“Yes,” Roman replied. He gestured casually toward the display cases lining the left wall of the boutique. “I want everything in those cases. The watches, the diamond tennis bracelets, the sapphire pendants. Box them up and have them delivered to my estate.”

The manager gasped, his eyes bulging. “Sir? All of it? That’s... that’s over three million dollars in inventory.”

“Did I stutter?” Roman asked, his tone perfectly even.

“No, sir! Right away, sir!”

Trevor sat frozen on the velvet chair, his jaw hanging open. He had just spent ten minutes mocking Sadi for not being able to afford a single item in the store. Now, her husband had casually purchased half the boutique’s inventory just to prove a point.

Roman turned his attention back to Trevor.

“You pride yourself on your ambition, Trevor,” Roman said, stating his name like a curse. “You think your tailored suit and your corner office make you a king. But you are nothing but a loud, pathetic insect buzzing in a world you do not understand.”

Trevor could not speak. His throat was completely dry.

“You kicked my wife,” Roman continued, stepping closer. “You put your hands on the Queen of this city. That is a debt that cannot be paid in apologies.”

Roman looked at Arthur, who was standing by the door. Arthur gave a slow, menacing nod.

“Enjoy the rest of your afternoon, Trevor,” Roman whispered. “It is the last peaceful one you will ever have.”
