Chapter 1 - THE GLASS OF ORANGE JUICE

“Drink it.”

Ava froze.

The glass touched her lips, but her trembling hands couldn’t move fast enough to push it away.

“No…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“I said no.”

Margaret’s eyes turned cold.

For years, everyone had called her a loving mother. A woman who sacrificed everything for her family. A woman who stayed by Ava’s side after the accident.

But behind closed doors…

She was someone else.

“You really think you still get to make decisions?”

Margaret leaned closer.

“You can’t even stand up without help.”

Ava’s fingers tightened around the arms of her wheelchair.

Her body was weak.

Her legs had stopped working after the crash.

But her mind was still sharp.

And she knew something was wrong.

“I know what you’re trying to do.”

Margaret smiled.

“Oh really?”

“You want me to sign those papers.”

The smile disappeared.

On the desk behind Margaret were several legal documents.

Property transfers.

Financial agreements.

Medical authorization forms.

Everything Ava owned.

Everything Ethan had built for their future.

Margaret tapped the papers with one finger.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”

“I’m not signing anything.”

Ava looked straight into her eyes.

“Not today. Not tomorrow. Never.”

The room became silent.

Outside the window, sunlight poured across the expensive office.

It looked peaceful.

Almost beautiful.

But inside…

A war was happening.

Margaret slowly placed the glass down.

“You still don’t understand.”

Ava frowned.

“Understand what?”

Margaret walked around the wheelchair.

“That after everything that happened, nobody is coming to save you.”

Ava’s breathing became heavier.

“You’re wrong.”

“Am I?”

Margaret laughed softly.

“Your husband is always busy. Your friends stopped visiting. And everyone believes I’m the only person who stayed.”

She leaned down.

“I’m the only person they trust.”

Ava felt a chill run through her body.

Because that was the scariest part.

Margaret wasn’t just hurting her.

She had convinced everyone she was helping her.

“You’re sick.”

Ava whispered.

Margaret’s expression changed.

A flash of anger appeared.

Then disappeared.

“You should be careful with your words.”

She grabbed Ava’s chin.

Hard.

Ava gasped.

The old bruise on her cheek turned darker under Margaret’s fingers.

“You have no idea what I’m capable of.”

Tears filled Ava’s eyes.

But she refused to look away.

“I know exactly what you’re capable of.”

Margaret stared at her.

“You tried to make me disappear.”

For a second…

Something flickered in Margaret’s face.

Fear.

Only for a moment.

Then she smiled.

“You’re confused.”

“No.”

Ava shook her head.

“I remember.”

The air changed.

Margaret released her.

“What did you say?”

“I remember the night of the crash.”

Margaret stopped breathing.

Ava continued.

“I remember your car.”

A pause.

“I remember seeing you before everything went black.”

Margaret’s face went pale.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

“I do.”

Ava’s voice became stronger.

“You weren’t supposed to be there.”

The office door suddenly shook.

Both women turned.

Ava’s heart started racing.

Margaret looked toward the door.

Then back at Ava.

“You should have stayed quiet.”

Ava whispered:

“Someone is going to find out.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“No one is coming.”

And then…

The door exploded open.

“STOP!”

Lena rushed inside.

The young maid froze when she saw Ava.

The wheelchair.

The glass.

Margaret standing over her.

Her eyes moved to the documents on the desk.

“She didn’t sign.”

Margaret turned slowly.

“Excuse me?”

Lena stepped forward.

“She didn’t sign the papers.”

Her voice shook, but she didn’t move.

“I saw what you were doing.”

Margaret stared at her.

“You should leave.”

“No.”

Lena looked at Ava.

“I’m not leaving her alone.”

For the first time…

Margaret looked truly angry.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.”

Lena swallowed.

“Maybe.”

She looked back at the papers.

“But I know wrong when I see it.”

Ava tried to warn her.

“Lena… don’t.”

Too late.

Margaret moved.

Fast.

Her hand struck Lena across the face.

The sound echoed through the room.

Lena stumbled backward.

“Margaret!”

Ava screamed.

But Lena crashed into the wheelchair.

The damaged wheel snapped.

The entire chair tilted.

Ava’s eyes widened.

“No!”

The wheelchair fell.

Her body slammed onto the wooden floor.

Pain exploded through her back.

The room spun.

The legal documents flew into the air.

Lena crawled toward her.

“Ava! Are you okay?”

But Margaret wasn’t looking at Ava.

She was looking at the floor.

At something rolling beneath the desk.

A small bottle.

Ava saw it too.

The label was almost invisible.

But she recognized it.

The same bottle Margaret gave her every morning.

“The vitamins…”

Her voice shook.

Margaret quickly stepped forward.

But it was too late.

The bottle hit the floor.

The cap broke open.

White pills scattered across the sunlight.

Lena stared.

“What are those?”

Nobody answered.

Because Ava already knew.

Her face lost all color.

Those pills weren’t vitamins.

They were the reason she had been feeling weaker every day.

The reason she couldn’t think clearly.

The reason Margaret thought she could control her.

Ava slowly looked up.

“Ethan…”

Her voice cracked.

“He needs to know.”

Margaret’s eyes turned terrifying.

“No.”

She stepped toward Ava.

“You don’t get to ruin everything.”

Ava tried to move.

She couldn’t.

Her body betrayed her.

Margaret reached down.

But before her fingers touched Ava…

The double doors opened.

A man stood frozen in the doorway.

Ethan.

The man Ava loved.

The man Margaret had spent years manipulating.

His briefcase slipped from his hand.

It hit the floor.

Nobody spoke.

His eyes moved across the room.

The broken wheelchair.

The scattered pills.

The unsigned documents.

Lena holding her bruised face.

And his wife…

Lying helplessly on the floor.

Then his eyes stopped on Margaret.

“Mom?”

Margaret’s face went completely white.

Because she finally understood.

Her perfect lie…

Had just collapsed in front of the one person she needed to believe her.

And Ethan was about to discover the truth that would destroy his entire family.
