Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH IN THE RECORDING
Ethan returned to Ava.
But this time…
He didn’t know what to believe.
Ava saw his face.
“What happened?”
He placed the folder on the table.
Her expression changed.
“Where did you get that?”
“So it’s real?”
Ava looked away.
“Ethan…”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I need the truth.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
She had no answer.
“After I knew I could trust you.”
That hurt.
Because Ethan realized something.
His wife had been afraid of him too.
Not because of who he was.
Because of what his mother had done.
“I found something else.”
He pulled out a small recording device.
“I found this hidden in the office.”
Ava stared.
“Play it.”
The recording began.
Margaret’s voice filled the room.
“If she refuses to sign, increase the dosage.”
Ava covered her mouth.
Ethan’s face turned pale.
The recording continued.
“She can’t remember everything. That’s the advantage.”
A long silence.
Then another voice.
A man’s voice.
A voice Ethan didn’t recognize.
“She’s stronger than you expected.”
Margaret answered:
“Then we make sure she doesn’t become strong again.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan whispered:
“My God…”
Ava cried silently.
But before Ethan could comfort her…
The phone rang.
It was the police.
“Mr. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“We need you to come down here immediately.”
“Why?”
The officer paused.
Then said:
“We found new evidence about your wife’s accident.”
Ethan stood.
“What evidence?”
The officer’s voice became serious.
“We found proof…”
A pause.
“That the crash was planned.”
Ethan looked at Ava.
And then the officer said the words that changed everything.
“The person who arranged it…”
