Chapter 5 - THE PERSON IN THE DARK
Ethan slowly turned around.
A figure stood near the doorway.
His heart raced.
“Who are you?”
The person stepped forward.
It was Lena.
“Ethan, it’s me.”
He released a breath.
“Lena? What are you doing here?”
She looked terrified.
“I followed you.”
“Why?”
“Because someone needs to know the truth.”
Ethan held up the folder.
“You knew about this?”
Lena looked down.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
She hesitated.
“Months.”
Ethan’s anger exploded.
“You knew my mother was doing this?”
“I knew something was wrong.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because she threatened me.”
The words stopped him.
“What did she threaten?”
Lena’s eyes filled with tears.
“She knew about my brother.”
Ethan frowned.
“What about him?”
“She paid his medical bills.”
A pause.
“And then she told me she could make them disappear.”
Ethan looked at the documents again.
The woman he trusted.
The person everyone admired.
Was controlling everyone around her.
“She owns people.”
Lena nodded.
“Yes.”
Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside.
Someone was coming.
Lena grabbed Ethan’s arm.
“We need to leave.”
Too late.
The door opened.
Margaret stood there.
Her expression was calm.
Too calm.
“I’m disappointed.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Because after everything…”
She looked at the folders.
“You chose her.”
Ethan’s voice shook.
“You hurt my wife.”
Margaret’s face changed.
For the first time…
She stopped pretending.
“You have no idea what I did for you.”
“What does that mean?”
Margaret smiled.
“You think Ava was innocent?”
Ethan froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Margaret stepped closer.
“Ask her why she was really driving that night.”
Ethan stared.
Again.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Margaret walked away.
Leaving him with the same terrifying question.
