Chapter 4 - THE SECRET MICHAEL NEVER KNEW“WHAT DID YOU DO, DANIEL?”

Michael stood across the private security room, his daughter wrapped in a blanket beside him.
Police had detained Vanessa and Richard downstairs, but neither had been taken away yet. Detectives wanted to understand exactly what was stored on the memory card before making formal arrests.
Daniel said nothing.
He didn’t know.
The security technician inserted the card.
Several folders appeared.
Financial statements.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
Then one folder labeled:
MERCER — 15 YEARS.
Michael looked at Daniel.
“Open it.”
The first document contained a name Daniel hadn’t seen since college.
Thomas Reed.
Daniel stepped backward.
“No.”
Michael noticed.
“You know him?”
Daniel’s mouth went dry.
Thomas had been Daniel’s closest friend.
Fifteen years earlier, Thomas died in a late-night car accident after leaving a party at the Mercer family estate.
Daniel had always believed he caused it.
They had argued.
Thomas drove away angry.
Hours later, police found his car beneath a bridge.
Daniel had carried the guilt ever since.
The technician opened an audio file.
A man’s voice filled the room.
It belonged to Daniel’s father, Henry Mercer.
“Thomas cannot be allowed to speak.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Another voice answered.
“What about Daniel?”
“Make him believe the accident was his fault.”
Michael slowly sat down.
Daniel stared at the speakers.
His father had died five years earlier.
But his voice was unmistakable.
The recording continued.
Thomas had discovered that Henry Mercer was secretly diverting millions from employee pension accounts into offshore companies.
Thomas intended to expose him.
Henry had stopped him.
Daniel whispered:
“My father killed him.”
Michael looked devastated.
“Our father.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
For fifteen years he had awakened remembering their argument.
Thomas shouting.
Daniel shouting back.
The car disappearing into darkness.
He had built his entire adult life around guilt that someone else had manufactured.
But Michael suddenly pointed at the screen.
“Wait.”
Another document showed recent transactions.
The offshore accounts still existed.
Someone had been withdrawing money.
Daniel leaned closer.
The authorized signature belonged to—
Richard Hale.
Now the conspiracy made sense.
Richard discovered Henry’s hidden fortune while managing the Mercer estate.
Vanessa discovered Richard.
Together, they planned to marry Michael, eliminate him, control the trust, and take everything.
But Lily’s recording had endangered them.
Michael hugged his daughter tighter.
“You saved my life.”
Lily shook her head.
“I was scared.”
“You were brave while you were scared.”
Daniel looked away, fighting tears.
Then the security-room door opened.
A detective entered.
His expression was tense.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“Vanessa is gone.”
Michael stood.
“What do you mean, gone?”
“The fire alarm activated downstairs. During the evacuation, someone wearing catering staff clothing escorted her through the kitchen.”
Daniel immediately looked at the monitors.
“Richard?”
“Still in custody.”
Daniel’s eyes moved toward Lily.
The detective understood.
“We’ll place officers around the child.”
Michael pulled Lily close.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
He answered.
Vanessa’s voice whispered:
“You should have let the wedding happen.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Where are you?”
She ignored him.
“You opened the memory card, didn’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Then you know Richard and I weren’t the beginning.”
Daniel glanced toward Michael.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Your father didn’t build that operation alone.”
Daniel’s grip tightened.
“Who helped him?”
There was silence.
Then Vanessa answered:
“Ask Lily’s grandmother.”
The call ended.
Michael went pale.
Because Lily’s grandmother wasn’t Daniel and Michael’s mother.
She was Michael’s late wife’s mother.

And she was supposed to be in Connecticut.
The same woman who had supposedly been watching Lily all weekend.
