Chapter 9 - THE FIRST MERCER LIE“YOUR FATHER STOLE MY LIFE.”

Charles Mercer descended the metal staircase slowly.
He was nearly seventy, elegantly dressed, his silver hair perfectly combed. Nothing about him resembled a fugitive.
That frightened Daniel more than the armed men surrounding them.
Michael struggled against his restraints.
“You’re supposed to be dead.”
Charles smiled.
“So is half the room.”
His eyes moved toward Thomas and Robert.
Then toward Vanessa.
Finally, he looked at Daniel.
“Henry was always talented at funerals.”
Charles explained that the Mercer financial empire had not been created by Henry alone. Decades earlier, the brothers had built an illegal network that moved corporate money through shell companies.
But Charles wanted more.
Judges.
Politicians.
Executives.
Anyone could be purchased or destroyed.
Henry eventually tried to leave.
Charles refused to let him.
Their war became invisible.
Whenever Charles targeted someone, Henry hid them by creating convincing deaths.
Thomas.
Robert.
Rebecca.
Eventually Catherine.
Daniel stared at Thomas.
“So my father wasn’t innocent.”
“No,” Thomas answered quietly.
“He did terrible things.”
Robert stepped forward.
“But he spent the last years of his life trying to dismantle what he helped create.”
Charles laughed.
“My brother developed a conscience after becoming rich.”
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“And you?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“My father worked for Charles.”
Everyone went silent.
Vanessa explained that her father had tried to escape the network when she was fourteen.
He disappeared.
Years later, she discovered Richard Hale had handled payments connected to his disappearance.
So she approached Richard.
Became his lover.
Earned his trust.
Then targeted the Mercer family because she believed Henry’s hidden files contained proof.
Michael’s expression hardened.
“You still used me.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa did not look away.
“And I will regret that for the rest of my life.”
Suddenly Charles began laughing.
“You children still think this is about guilt.”
He looked toward Robert.
“Give me the ledger.”
Robert shook his head.
“I don’t have it.”
Charles raised his gun.
“Then Lily does.”
Michael lunged forward.
Charles fired.
The bullet struck the floor beside Michael’s feet.
“Next one goes higher.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“You touch Lily, you lose everything.”
Charles smiled.
“Why?”
“Because she copied it.”
The room went still.
Daniel was bluffing.
But Charles didn’t know that.
For the first time, fear appeared in his uncle’s eyes.
Then Vanessa understood Daniel’s plan.
She smiled.
“Not just copied.”
She lifted her phone.
“Uploaded.”
Charles stared at her.
Vanessa pressed the screen.
“Every account. Every payment. Every name.”
Charles shouted for his men to take the phone.
But nobody moved.
A red laser appeared across his chest.
Then another.
Then six more.
Police tactical teams surrounded the depot.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You called them.”
“No.”
Vanessa looked toward Michael.
“He did.”
Michael smiled through the blood on his face.
“I learned something from Lily.”
Charles stared at him.
“What?”
May you like
Michael’s smile disappeared.
“Always keep a second copy.”
