Chapter 5 - THE IMPOSSIBLE LEDGER Forensic accountants discovered something strange.
The ledger looked authentic.
Almost.
Three pages contained Bellandi logos that had not existed when the entries supposedly occurred.
Some dates were impossible.
One entry claimed Jackson had authorized a $72,000 settlement in the game room on a night when he had been in Boston.
Claire verified it.
Hotel records confirmed Jackson's location.
Jackson stared at the page.
"Someone wanted this to look real."
"Yes."
"But they made mistakes."
"Because they were manufacturing history."
That changed everything.
The ledger wasn't evidence of a criminal operation.
It was a weapon.
Someone was constructing a believable lie from pieces of the Bellandi family's real history.
And they expected the family to panic when it was discovered.
They expected Jackson to hide it.
They expected him to protect the Bellandi name.
Claire looked at him.
"Whoever did this knows your family very well."
Jackson looked toward the hallway.
