Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the Money Elliot escaped through the hospital loading dock.

Police found his vehicle abandoned six miles away.
But he had left enough behind.
Bank records.
Shell corporations.
Fake consulting contracts.
Millions of dollars transferred through companies that existed only on paper.
Claire had been right.
The nineteen million dollars were only the beginning.
The total exceeded seventy million.
And every transfer had been approved using Claire's stolen digital identity.
The question was no longer who stole the money.
It was why they had needed Claire's identity.
The answer came from the company's trust structure.
Claire's shares could block the takeover.
Her signature couldn't.
Unless someone could make it appear she had voluntarily approved everything.
That was why the fake videos mattered.
That was why the death certificate mattered.
That was why Claire had to disappear.
Then we discovered something else.
Claire's emergency trust contained a physical authentication token.
A small security device.
Without it, the digital signatures were worthless.
Elliot had never had it.
Neither had Vanessa.
Claire had hidden it.
And the final note on her encrypted drive said:
THE PERSON THEY WILL NEVER SEARCH IS THE PERSON WHO HAS IT.
Noah read the sentence twice.
“Mom gave it to someone.”
“Who?”
He looked toward the old family photograph.
“Our grandmother.”
My mother, Evelyn, lived in a memory-care facility.
She had dementia.
She forgot my name sometimes.
But she never forgot Claire.
I called the facility.
The nurse answered.
“Mr. Carter, your mother was taken out an hour ago.”
“By whom?”
“Your wife.”
I froze.
“Vanessa?”
“She said you approved the outing.”

I looked at Ruiz.
Vanessa had taken the one person Claire trusted enough to protect her final secret.
