Chapter 6 - Claire's Voice The recording began with Claire breathing hard.

“You're stealing from the company.”
Vanessa answered:
“You can't prove anything.”
“I copied everything.”
Elliot's voice came from somewhere in the background.
“You shouldn't have done that.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You're all terrified of what happens when Daniel finds out.”
Then a struggle.
A crash.
A scream.
A heavy impact.
Claire fell.
Noah covered his mouth.
Marcus said:
“She hit her head.”
Vanessa was crying.
“I didn't mean to.”
“Shut up,” Marcus snapped.
Elliot said:
“Get the car.”
Then silence.
The recording ended.
Ruiz listened twice.
“It isn't enough for a murder charge.”
“But it's enough to prove they were there.”
“Yes.”
The next morning Marcus called.
“You found the card.”
I stared at the phone.
“How do you know?”
“I know what Claire hid.”
“Where is she?”
Silence.
“Come to the underground garage beneath my clinic.”
Ruiz wanted me to wait.
I didn't.
Marcus stood beneath fluorescent lights.
He looked twenty years older.
“Claire was alive for thirty-six hours after the fall.”
My hands curled into fists.
“Where?”
“Your father's lake house.”
“Why wasn't she taken to a hospital?”
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Because she woke up.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
A sharp crack echoed through the garage.
Marcus jerked.
Blood spread across his shirt.
He collapsed against me.
A second bullet shattered a windshield.
Ruiz's team rushed in.
The shooter disappeared.
Before the ambulance doors closed, Marcus grabbed my sleeve.
His voice was barely audible.
May you like
“Boiler room.”
Then he was gone.
