Chapter 20 - The Drawer A year later, I finally cleaned out my father's office.

I almost didn't open the top drawer.

For months, I had avoided it.

That drawer had changed my life.

It had taken my sister away.

And it had given her back to me in the only way possible.

I opened it.

Tax documents.

Old contracts.

A photograph.

Nothing unusual.

Then I noticed something beneath the wooden lining.

A small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not in Claire's handwriting.

My father's.

I sat down.

My heart began pounding.

Inside was a single photograph.

My father stood beside Claire when she was ten.

On the back, he had written:

If Daniel ever opens the wrong drawer, show him this one.

There was another note.

Short.

Cryptic.

Your sister was investigating more than Vanessa and Elliot.

Ask who really owned the lake house.

I stared at the words.

The lake house had belonged to my father.

Or so I had always believed.

I looked at the photograph again.

In the background, barely visible behind the trees, stood a man I didn't recognize.

Except I did.

Marcus Hale.

Years before he became our family doctor.

Years before Carter Meridian.

Years before Claire disappeared.

My phone rang.

It was Noah.

“Uncle Dan?”

“Yeah?”

“You need to come downstairs.”

“Why?”

He hesitated.

“There was something in Mom's old computer.”

“What kind of something?”

“A message.”

“From Claire?”

“No.”

My heart stopped.

“Then who?”

Noah's voice became quieter.

“It says Dad's name.”

I stood up.

The old office suddenly felt colder.

Outside, the lake wind pushed against the windows.

For thirteen months, I had believed the nightmare ended when Vanessa, Marcus, and Elliot were exposed.

Maybe it had.

Maybe Claire's story was finally over.

But as I looked at my father's note, I realized something terrifying.

Claire hadn't been investigating one conspiracy.

She had been pulling on a thread that led backward through our entire family history.

And someone had known about it long before she did.

I closed the drawer.

Then opened it again.

This time, I wasn't afraid of what I'd find.

Because I had learned something Claire had tried to teach me from the beginning:

The truth doesn't disappear just because people hide it.

Sometimes…

it simply waits for the right person to open the drawer.

May you like

And somewhere downstairs, Noah was waiting with a message that might change everything all over again.

The End… or the beginning of the next secret.
