If you are reading this, then I had less time with you than I wanted.
Sophie cried before reaching the second paragraph.
Caroline wrote about tiny things.
The smell of Sophie’s hair after a bath.
The way she slept with one foot outside the blanket.
The week she tried to eat leaves.
Her obsession with wooden spoons.
Then Caroline wrote about fear.
Maybe people told you I tried to protect you.
Please don’t turn my fear into your life.
Then money.
The trust is a tool.
Not an identity.
You may keep it.
Sell it.
Give it away.
Make mistakes with it.
The only thing I hope is that nobody convinces you that family wealth purchases your obedience.
Then David.
Your father loves you.
He sometimes avoids difficult things until someone else chooses for him.
If he changed, I’m glad.
If he didn’t, you can still love him and have boundaries.
Sophie smiled through tears.
There was no demand that she worship David.
No instruction that she forgive anyone.
No command to preserve the Carter empire.
The final line read:
Be bigger than our last name.
Sophie brought the letter to the kitchen.
David read it.
When he reached Caroline’s description of him, he laughed weakly.
“Ouch.”
“Again.”
Then he reached the final line.
He cried.
Sophie left for college.
She studied documentary writing and technology ethics.
At twenty-one, she gained limited voting rights in the family company.
Her first vote supported a policy preventing corporations from using minor family members in promotional material.
Nothing glamorous.
No speech.
No headlines.
Just structure.
Then investors made her an enormous offer.
Buy all twenty-six percent.
Walk away from Carter Holdings forever.
For the first time, Sophie could choose without Gregory.
Without Vanessa.
Without Caroline.
