Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN CAROLINE KNEW The police turned the Carter mansion into a crime scene before sunset.

Vanessa changed her story three times.

First Owen was a burglar.

Then she had panicked.

Then she said nothing at all.

Sophie sat wrapped in a blanket beside Detective Elena Ruiz while paramedics examined her wrists.

No permanent injuries.

But the marks were real.

So was the terror.

Owen had been trapped inside the old servant passage for eleven hours.

He had returned that morning because of an automated email.

Sent by Caroline.

Eighteen months after her death.

The message contained one sentence:

If Sophie still lives in the house, check the lavender pillow.

David stared at him.

“You’re telling me Caroline scheduled messages before she died?”

“She was afraid something would happen.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“She didn’t trust the people around you.”

That sentence hurt more than David expected.

Police created a forensic copy of the black card.

The first video began.

Caroline appeared inside her car four days before her death.

Her dark hair was pulled back.

Her eyes looked exhausted.

“If anyone finds this,” she said, “do not assume my husband knows.”

David’s chest tightened.

“I found transfers from Carter Family Holdings into companies that shouldn’t exist.”

She looked toward her rearview mirror.

“Vanessa Hale appears in two of them.”

David stopped breathing.

Hale.

Vanessa’s maiden name.

Caroline had known Vanessa before David ever met her.

The next file contained a photograph.

Vanessa walking into an office building beside Gregory Carter.

David’s older brother.

Chairman of Carter Family Holdings.

The man who had stood beside David at Caroline’s funeral.

The timestamp was six months before Caroline died.

Sophie pointed.

“That’s Uncle Gregory.”

David’s hands went cold.

Owen spoke quietly.

“Caroline believed Gregory was diverting company assets.”

“My brother?”

“Yes.”

“And Vanessa?”

“An intermediary.”

David turned on him.

“Why didn’t Caroline tell me?”

Owen’s expression changed.

“She did.”

David froze.

“What?”

“She gave you a folder.”

Memory slammed into him.

A thick envelope.

Ten days before the crash.

Caroline had pushed it toward him during an argument.

David had been late for a board meeting.

He hadn’t opened it.

Instead, he gave it to Gregory.

Handle whatever Caroline is worried about.

He had placed his wife’s evidence directly into the hands of the man she was investigating.

David sat down.

His stomach turned.

The fourth file was audio.

Caroline’s voice.

“If Gregory already has the folder I gave David, then he knows I’m investigating him.”

A man answered.

“Then it’s too late to handle this quietly.”

David recognized the voice immediately.

Caleb Voss.

The Carter family attorney.

A man who had handled David’s estate.

His marriage contracts.

Sophie’s financial documents.

Everything.

David looked through the glass toward Vanessa.

Then at Gregory’s photograph.

Then at Caleb’s name on the evidence log.

Three people.

All inside his life.

All connected to Caroline before she died.

And suddenly David understood the most terrifying possibility of all.

Vanessa had not entered his life after Caroline’s death.

She had been waiting outside it.
