Chapter 5 - BENEATH THE TERRACE Police brought ground scanners.

They found metal beneath the concrete.
Workers opened the terrace.
Inside an old support column sat a sealed box.
Caroline had hidden it well enough that the demolition crew had missed it by inches.
Inside were four things.
A hard drive.
A notebook.
A key.
And a photograph of newborn Sophie.
The notebook was not sentimental.
Dates.
Transactions.
Names.
Gregory appeared constantly.
Caleb appeared even more.
Vanessa less often, but always near moments that mattered.
Marcus appeared with one handwritten note:
Possibly turning.
The key opened a private bank box.
There investigators found the original documents protecting Sophie’s twenty-six percent.
Three independent trustees.
No access for David.
None for Gregory.
None for any future spouse.
Caroline had trusted systems more than promises.
The encrypted hard drive opened using the phrase Sophie counts seven.
Inside was enough evidence to destroy a dynasty.
Twenty-four million dollars missing.
Fake vendors.
Offshore accounts.
Private instructions.
And one recording.
Caroline and Gregory.
“I’m taking this outside the family.”
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I understand twenty-four million dollars is missing.”
“It can be recovered.”
“You stole it.”
“I moved capital.”
“To companies you control.”
Silence.
Then Gregory said the sentence he would repeat years later.
“Think about Sophie.”
Caroline answered immediately.
“That’s exactly what I’m doing.”
David closed his eyes.
There it was.
The truth.
His wife had not been paranoid.
She had been surrounded.
Then investigators reopened the crash.
Photographs of Caroline’s brake line showed something the original report had labeled wear.
A clean partial cut.
The vehicle’s last inspection had been performed at Hale Automotive.
Owned by Vanessa’s brother.
Ryan Hale denied touching the brake line improperly.
But he remembered someone else entering the garage.
Caleb Voss.
Vanessa had brought Caroline’s vehicle there two days before the crash.
Why?
“Gregory wanted to scare her,” Vanessa finally admitted.
“What kind of scare?”
“A breakdown.”
David nearly lunged through the interview-room glass.
Detective Ruiz stopped him.
Vanessa sobbed.
“Caleb said it would be minor.”
“And when Caroline died?”
“I stayed quiet.”
“And then you married me.”
Vanessa lowered her face.
“Yes.”
That night, federal agents arrested Caleb Voss at a private airport in Arizona.
Cash.
Two passports.
One silver watch.
The man Caroline had feared was finally in custody.
But one question remained.
May you like
Had Caroline died because a threat went wrong?
Or because someone had decided she could never be allowed to speak?
